So what happens after EM-1 is announced?

The current deal on the EM-5 ends on 9/14. With the EM-1 announcement expected on 9/10, is the price of the EM-5 likely to go up or down?

Why would it go anywhere?
In reply to craigz, 10 months ago

It's come down during the previous few months based on the usual "nearing end of life expectancy" part of its cycle; the current price already reflects the fact that there is a "kind of" successor. Just like the price of the GH3 has fallen a little, and will probably drop a little more as its successor approaches. Like many stocks, the price often already reflects known future events.

Anyway, who cares if it drops $50 or goes up a little? Anyone waiting to purchase a camera body to save $50/100 needs to find a new hobby - the costs lie in the lenses.

I would be willing to bet that your bank account is bigger than your knowledge of photograpy on that statement.

For the OP I would think the chances are that the EM-5 price would go down due to the fact that it is no longer the flagship of the brand with the new body taking some sales away from it, thus creating less demand, thus inventory sitting, thus dealers lowering the price to get rid of the inventory. Add to the fact that an update is getting closer and all of the sudden the EM-5 is old technology and not worth as much...

Since the E-M1 isnot the true replacement for the E-M5 the E-M1 announcement just might not much an effect on the price of the E-M5.  In fact the price of the E-M5 might go up a little because most likely the factory is producing E-M1 cameras and not as many, if any, E-M5 bodies so the E-M5 bodies might be in short supply.

I'll tell you what will happen once the EM-1 is announced:

People will start complaining that some other region of the world is going to get the camera first.

People will start long threads in this forum about where the camera is and isn't available.

People will start to read previews as evidence why this camera is better/worse than some previous camera.

A major debate will start about who made the sensor, or some other important component. Is it Olympus or Sony?

There will be threads asking whether a camera bought in one location will have the same video constraints as one bought somewhere else and also whether or not the warranty is valid.

People will start to wait for the DxO test results to see if there really is any improvement in dynamic range and reduction in low light noise.

And finally people will start to talk about the new Panasonic camera that is going to come out sometime.

Everyone starts gossiping about the next camera rumor.

The current deal on the EM-5 ends on 9/14. With the EM-1 announcement expected on 9/10, is the price of the EM-5 likely to go up or down?

Long term trend is always down.  The deal isn't much.  If you shop around, like look on ebay, you might find a better price.

Once the first pictures taken with the camera start to trickle down from different sites, all hell will break loose here and everything, from the end of 4/3, the arrest of Olympus top executives, up to the demise of full frame cameras and the end of the world as we know it now, will be predicted here!

I actually don't mind these things. This forum really does help people find where a new camera is available, often for a very brief period of time. I don't mind someone from the EU explaining again about the limits to the length of videos due to silly taxes. The vast majority of the threads on this and all the other forums here are only important to a small subset of us. But that is OK with me. I don't like all the sniping, but I can just ignore those posts too. My two pet peeves are totally non-descript titles and the hijacking of an otherwise worthwhile thread. For example a title like these:

"What Do You Think?" (about what)

"Is This Too Much?"

And the hijacking I see the most is a reasonable topic about a camera turning into "Pan-lympus is better than Oly-sonic" or "the sensors are the same/different".

But I think things are getting better. There used to be a lot of obnoxious comments about other poster's English. I think everyone has realized that we are lucky to have this forum in a language we can understand and it is made better by the all the comments made by some folks that are working harder to participate.

One last comment. The main reason I have a m4/3 system is because it is has the most diverse list of suppliers. While I don't like the hijacking of other threads, I do think the m4/3 format is made a lot better because Panasonic and Olympus are competing to make a better camera. They are not just Canon completing against Nikon. Each of these players have their main customer base locked into their format. I have Panasonic camera, two Olympus lenses, two Olympus lenses, and two Leica legacy lenses. I love m4/3.

Olympus tends to hold the reins pretty tight on their pricing....they don't drop the MSRP until an item has been discontinued, as a rule...I would expect you will be able to get a good deal on some lenses if you buy at the same time as the body, though, for their holiday sales (it's what they usually do)....

Panasonic has a different philosophy of marketing, more of a mass marketer's point of view.  However, even with their top end gear, they don't drop it precipitously until about a year after it's announced...and sometimes not even then (the GH2 never did come down in price).  I suspect if you want this camera, you will probably see it for around $1250 on special after about a year...but probably not a lot less than that.  Personally, if I had the money and it met my needs, I'd just buy the thing and not look back.  The amount of use I would have of it while I waited for it to go on sale alone would justify the cost...but to each his own.
