Absolutely spot on. People just do not realize how lucky they are to have such fantastic gear. All this Pentax knocking is doing so much harm to the very product they think they understand how to use.

Just one point, it seems to me that those who have the least knowledge about photography, make the most noise !

Given in the poll 90% of respondents expected no ff announcement or didn't care anyway the 10% don't half create a din

So much so that people assume Ricoh is hemorrhaging customers when a little detailed investigation shows the opposite to be true.

Even today a post has appeared (good riddance pentax) from a user who created the same rant nearly 12months ago with the same conclusion (he's off) yet he isn't !!!

Worse he seems surprised that a camera he couldn't use 12 months ago (be it skill or faulty jury is out), having done nothing to rectify, he still couldn't use today but that didn't stop him screaming from the rafters  you have to laugh

I's is easier to downplay the profound disappointment that respires in this forum after the IFA announcement (or lack of). It can probably be measured in a better way by counting the number of threads that came to life as the expectation of the big announcement that was supposed to happen at IFA grew day by day.

Here are the threads:

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3542666 (No full frame.....)

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3542638 (Ricoh news... )

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3542480 (Is today the day...)

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3542546 (No new Pentax today...)

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3542596 (6:10AM at the reservoir)

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3528103 (Any New Bodies Coming?)

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3542625 (Ricoh announcement at IFA)

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3542621 (Live blog with Ricoh updates.)

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3542372 (Ricoh Press Conference)

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3542322 (Ricoh Theta 360)

That's a lot of energy and anticipation!

This indicates that a lot of people, even senior members, were really excited about was about to come..

Since nothing happened, lets focus on how great our current cameras are. I will take my k-01 tomorrow for a walk...

Hi,

Asahi man did tip a high end APSC DSLR early this year  It wasn't announced in April for reasons he didn't know or couldn't say.  He later informed us about the Sept 5 Ricoh conference, but didn't say it was to announce a DSLR or any other specific products.   He's also told us that the teleconverter was in production, and some of us probably added that to the Sept 5th list.   We've assumed that the conference was the one to announce these things.  The post in which Asahi Man informed us that the conference would deal only with the Theta 360 sounds as if this was genuinely counter to his expectations.

The notion of FF appearing at the Sept 5th conference never came from Asahi Man.  He's said perfectly clearly that there would be no FF in 2013.  This was wishful thinking - I don't think anyone who's been seriously watching Pentax statements about their evolving consideration of FF would have expected a product this year.

I suspect that Asahi Man had reasonable tips about the products, but that the Sept 5th conference was the wrong timing for their release.  I'm betting that they will emerge closer to whatever Photokina is called these days.   Let's give him a break......  October?

Cheers, Rod

Yet in the very thread you linked

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3542480 (Is today the day...)

out of 86 people only 4 expected a FF announcement.

But then again most of your links are not related to any FF announcement or disappointment in Pentax , Some you linked are over a month old.!!

Most are news articles on the announcement and link to data sources.

Remind me what does a morning stroll around a Hertfordshire reservoir have to do with any Pentax feeding frenzy ?

Undoubtedly Pentax will have new models in the pipeline (that's what they do), Equally in this forum screams rants and put downs will rise as expectation increases, The same has happens every year around this time as the photo fair season hit the road.

It easy to find Pentax doomed , how could they , total let down posts and article dating back many years yet Pentax still exists and still do what they think is commercially viable whatever the 'web' experts say.

You can even find posts from me circa 2007-2008 stating if Pentax don't release a FF by photokina then I've had enough and am off

Yet 5 years later I'm still shooting aps-c , due to technological improvements in sensors my ff needs were met by aps-c.

It was a shock in Ricoh's HQ …
In reply to JimBim, Sep 6, 2013

..

Two years after the Purchase of Pentax for peanuts, they've realised (!) they have:

  • Pentax customers to care about too,
  • supplier obligations,
  • sales obligations
  • three all new mounts,
  • plenty of cameras to make,
  • plenty to replace,
  • keep up with time,
  • and a range of lenses they've never dreamt about.

A corporate bubble dream of weekend company purchases has dispersed — and reality was facing them — there there was in fact some commitment to make!

A novel concept in their books, since they seldom bothered with consumers. Because if they were good with end consumers, their own cameras would flourish.

Now I'm afraid that they'll bust Pentax same way they busted their own camera 'hobby'.

Re: Disregard Asahiman?!
In reply to Rod McD, Sep 6, 2013

Ι was following these discussions with great anticipation and I was too a little dissapointed with the no announcement news. But this is what I think right now

K5 was announced Sep 20, 2010 and

K5ii Sep was announced 10, 2012

then

K30 was announced May 21, 2012 and

K50 was announced Jun 12, 2013

regardless our anticipation for Sept 5, it is clear that a K5 or higher spec'ed camera is due to come soon. Very soon. We can't tell if Pentax's delay is because of problems or if Ricoh severly changed the camera and lens roadmap since they acquired Pentax brand.

I believe it is the second. To me, they try to gain time before their real new products. Why?

Well, first they only reheated K30 with the K50 changing almost nothing. K500 is again a cheaper (non wr) version of K30 also. HD stock -of a great camera- must go.

Then, WR-L lenses did not need any serious R&D.

Finally and mostly, K5ii/K5iiS kept K5 name/coding. Although these cameras could deserve a new name for the f2.8 central AF sensor and non-problematic AF module of K5, they did not get it. I mean that K7 had a new body with a 100% OVF compared to K20, but in the inside they were mostly similar. But the name changed. But they did not do it with K5ii series. Maybe it was a statement that the new cameras will not have the low light artifical colour FF issues.

I have a feeling that Ricoh wants all the big news in a new camera that will not have anything to do with the Hoya era. Even the new red colouring of the HD coated Limiteds advocate this. And it is also clear that the can keep their secrets.

Asahiman has given enough info in this forum in the past, we must not blame him, Ricoh keeps their cards from us until the big news arrive. And as the competitors are giving more and more features in their recent models, maybe it is wise for Ricoh to do so if they give us something really big. And they better do as the FF/crop/mirrorless market is on fire.

At the moment, I am thinking that it is the best time to upgrade my K5 with a K5ii.

Kind Regards,

Spyros

When a market is so tough it's good to be prudent
In reply to JimBim, Sep 6, 2013

We have all seen the very weak camera sales, from the compacts getting hammered by smartphones, to the mirrorless market suffering on the base of tough comparables, to the DSLRs.

Companies are supposed to create value on top of their cost of capital.  Now that the sales expectations are significantly lower, the only reasonable thing to do, is to be prudent on any investment, and revise even current plans down to focus on only the very best.

The difficulty is that no one is really sure what the very best projects are, if any - perhaps with this now very mature photography market and the growing threat from smartphones then only some niche products can be ok.

- Sony proved it brilliantly with the RX100

- way back then Panasonic had done well with pocketable superzooms but now most everyone has one.  Still seems to be doing a lot better than the rest of the compact market though

- rugged compacts also seem to have some life left in them

- Sony seem to have done OK for a while with APS-C mirrorless.  Canon failed w the M because they had purposedly crippled it - but maybe the upcoming new high-end M will be great.  Maybe Nikon can also come up with a great product in this space

- and whatever else one can imagine
