My garden friend
In reply to zackiedawg, Sep 1, 2013

This little lady is busy feeding her baby. I have become her friend and she takes seed from me and scuttles back to the little one and feeds it. I do not normally photograph birds and this is taken with the kit zoom on my 7D. Not an award winner I know, but I hope you like it.

Last week, alternate camera
In reply to zackiedawg, Sep 1, 2013

Last week was constantly threatened by rain and very hot, so I stuck with my NEX-5N for birding duties...I've just been shooting this weekend with the A580 but won't get around to those photos until tomorrow, so here are some shots from the NEX last weekend around the wetlands:

Vulture circling overhead

First sighting of the solitary sandpipers for fall - they left back in spring and are just headed back down here

Another first migrator - and only the second time I've ever seen one - a northern waterthrush

He was in a VERY dark swampy pond area...I needed ISO3200 to shoot him on the shoreline!

Alligator moving in camoflauge, with his portable island

A tilapia lurking just under the surface of the water, in the shallows

A brown basilisk lizard on alert in case I chase him

A real challenge for any camera, and especially the NEX - barn swallows move a thousand miles an hour, but they're fun to try to shoot in flight!

For full disclosure, both barn swallow shots were taken while sitting in my swimming pool, cooling off!  They've been buzzing over my house for weeks now

It doesn't need to be an award winner: the story is worth a thousand pictures.  Thanks for sharing it.

Hi, Justin. While I'll admit to a strong preference for your A580 work, you never disappoint with regard to variety!  I like the sandpiper and waterthrush best in this set.

Birds - a productive week
In reply to zackiedawg, Sep 1, 2013

Hi,

spring time activity almost starting around here which normally means much more productive outings. Some I'd like to share. The hummingbird shots were all taken in nature which sometimes makes it difficult to get an unobstructed nice view of the bird.

Sombre Hummingbird

Experimenting with silhouette

Glittering bellied Emerald, female

Brazilian Ruby, female

Red-breasted Toucan

Rufous Hornero (Overbird)

Cream-bellied Thrush

Southern Lapwing

Cheers,

A fine catch - except for the bokeh   I've experienced similar with my 70-400mm G II when the background is too close to the subject
