Thanks for the post. Do you have any raw images that you would be willing to share?

This is impressive. They look clean!!!!

I would ask if you would share RAW but I would have to convert them. Maybe.  RAW?

Re: 70D samples...iso 12800

These were shot jpg. ...without a lot of regard as to focus.  Just wanted to get a quick look at hi iso done in genuine low light.  And, I'm quite ok with them.  Going out to countryside now...cu later.

Is there a way around Canon's aggressive noise reduction, i don't like it.

These look better than expected to me for ISO 12800.  I think they look pretty good.  Canon claims that there is 30% more hiigh ISO detail than previously.  But if you don't like their NR, shoot RAW and process to your own liking.

Those look amazing for ISO 12800.

Just goes to show what matters is the end result.

Of course you can use whatever noise reduction software you want.

For best results I would suggest using Canon DPP, making any exposure adjustments there under the RAW tab, use Canon's Digital Lens Optimizer, also, I would use Canon's Chroma Noise reduction (just set the luminescence noise reduction to 0), export as a 16 bit TIFF and use the noise reduction tool of your choice for the rest of it.

Re: 70D samples...iso 12800

There's a beta pre-release of CR8.2 with the 70D.

Does that install over 8.1 or is it a plug-in for PS?

I am NOT a LightRoom expert, but, here is my try using the above method and LightRoom's Noise Reduction.

Here's a link to the TIFF file. Hopefully some of you noise reduction experts will download it and post your results.

Re: 70D samples...iso 12800

Here's using DPP only, which I actually like better than the LightRoom one. YMMV.

A couple more.

They were underexposed since I didn't take the time to do it better on the new cam, so I increased exposure and some contrast in PSE. The size ...is what I usually use in FB. And at this iso, I'm not at all disappointed how it's working for me.

Oh, and I love the way the cam functions. Yeah, Canon does have the best ergonomics.

Tis a keeper.

Na. Its only slightly better. At least raw-wise. Who knows how much NR is applied.

A lot of it is the character of the 70D noise, very even and takes noise reduction well.

For example this image has NO Noise reduction, but, was simply down sized.
