I wonder how big it'll be...f2.8 at 150mm.  I hope it's reasonable prices...

I think some long time users of the longer Four Thirds lenses would probably prefer a 50-20 f2.8-3.5.

Personally I think it might actually be a 40-100mm f2.8 since that makes more sense.

Sure, f2.8 would be great to have, but I couldn't ju$tify an upgrade to my already excellent 40-150mm.

WIth the f/2.8 standard zoom going to 40mm, why would it make sense having only a 2.5x zoom range for its big brother? Going by the maximum effective aperture diameter of 150mm/2.8 = 54mm, which tends to dictate the size of the biggest and heaviest front elements, this could be comparable in size to an 80-300mm, f/5.6 for 35mm format. In fact, combining such an 80-300/5.6 with a 2x focal reducer would be one way to create a 40-150/2.8 for 4/3" format, but there are more optimal designs! So maybe no larger than the fairly common 75-300/3.5-5.6 zooms.

To put it another way, the 50-200/2.8-3.5 has a slightly larger maximum effective aperture diameter of 200mm/3.5 = 57mm, so a 40-150/2.8 could be a bit smaller.

Smaller lenses, better in low light, more telephoto reach:
you can have any *two* at one time.

If they can make it to a similar size/weight of the 100-300 (and why not?) I'm in.

Definitely among those who wanted the 50-200 adapted, but if they truly hold the aperture to 2.8 at 150, then it's a viable option even if it surrenders some reach. After that they can make a 150-350/4.0!

Cheers,

Rick

No. It will have the same diameter (since 150:2.8 is the same as 300:5.6). But it will be shorter since it's ending at 150mm, as opposed to 300mm.

It would be larger but would it be a LOT longer and a LOT wider? I'd guess they would want to keep it as small as possible to accommodate the 62mm filter size to match the new 12-40 PRO lens. I can't see them adding only their second PRO lens at a different filter size than 62mm.

Maybe the lens will be a 40-150mm F2.8-4.0 variable aperture to keep size and price down?

Will caution that Oly has a pretty sketchy record WRT standardizing filter sizes, so while logic may infer they'll keep the two new lenses the same, history only moderately supports it.

Am still scratching my head over the 12-40's apparently two-piece hood and how it may accommodate filters or other accessories.

Cheers,

Rick

True...but it does make a certain amount of sense based on the aperature size of 53.5mm to get 150mm and f/2.8 on the long end. You should be able to do a front element and filter threads such that a 62mm filter should fit just fine on it.

I'd imagine it will not be a small lens, but I doubt it'll be that big either. As pointed out, the 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 has a slightly larger maximum aperature, it also has 33% more reach AND it has a slightly longer lens register to work with.

If the price comes in at a resonable level, a 40-150mm f/2.8 would be very, very interesting to me. That said, if all later Olympus m4/3 cameras have PDAF on camera, an adapter and the 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 might be a better match for me.

Anything over 100mm is going to pretty much be exclusively wildlife and sports. Sports might pick up more as my kids get older (5, 3, 17 months now), but Wildlife is always going to be a very uncommon thing for me, though I could see some times wanting a lens for wildlife (Yellowstone, if I ever go on a trip to Africa, a few others I can think of). In either case, having the ability to go to 200mm would be rather nice, though maybe not mandatory.

Ah bollocks, this is what I really want. But since I prefer Panasonic bodies, not having IS in this particular range really spoils it for me.

Sigma had a 50-150/2.8 DX lens that was fairly small with a 67mm filter size and weighed 775g, about 200g less than the 50-200. So that's likely to be the approximate dimensions this new lens will be.

this agrees with what an Olympus rep told me in March this year at the Focus on Imaging Exhibition. The rumour then (amongst the UK Olympus reps) was that it may come out this Autumn but the 12-40 seems to have preceded it

A good match for 12-40 f2.8
In reply to Brian Wadie, Aug 29, 2013

Should be an excellent addition.  Then will only need a 140-300 f4.
