They are complaining about distortion in this review. Ken rockwell has positive review of this lens. So guess we need to wait for more reviews/images to come in.

Anyone speaks Italian here?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_zUHCcwNgE

The only thing I figure (I think) is that the 18-140 is sharper in the corners compared to the 18-105. The "X" is the 50/1.8 but dunno why that is included in the comparison.

<- pizza eater to the rescue!

The main point of the video is to make a comparison between the 18-105 and 18-140, he decided to throw the 50/1.8 in the mix to show the difference between the 3 lenses at 50mm.

The shots on the Nikon sign were all focused on the letter "A", first at 18mm and then at 50mm with the following difference:

18-140 at 50mm f 4.8

18-105 at 50mm f 5

The guy says that in this kind of situation there's basically no difference between the 2 lenses.

The test on the wall shows some difference though. When he zooms on the spots on the wall around the corners of the picture the 18-140 is much sharper, while the center of the picture doesn't show much difference at all.

The guy also points out that all the picture taken with the 50/1.8 are much sharper than both zoom lenses (for obvious reasons), and that the 50/1.8 will work much better in low light.

At the end of the video he points out that even though the 18-140 performs better than the 18-105 in terms of sharpness (especially in the corners), it's also more expensive, and if someone's looking for extra sharpness should keep in mind that a fixed focal will always outperform a zoom lense. It sounds pretty obvious, but it looks like his point is:"Get the 18-105 + a fixed focal for the same price of the 18-140.

Edit:

On a side note, are there many different versions of this lens? I'm kinda confused by the fact that my local store (I'm in Taiwan) has this:

18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX ED VR $9,500

9500nt$ is around 360us$, how come?  o.O

Many thanks for the 'translation'.

The lens is even cheaper here in HK, I bought it for around USD 285 a few days ago as replacement for my broken 18-105.

I don't know if there are different versions but the specs look the same as what is mentioned in the different reviews. It's made in Thailand if that matters.

I didn't feel like doing a word-by-word translation because most of his "review" is like:"YEAH...LOOK PRETTY SIMILAR TO ME.....BUY AN EXTRA LENS FROM OUR STORE, THANKS!". Not exactly a super in depth review, but at least the picture comparison was pretty clear!

Under 300$ in HK ? o.O I wonder how much the 18-55 kit lens is selling for around there xD

I found extremely weird that Canon and Nikon (and their lenses) are much cheaper on this part of the world, while Sony is more expensive....weird taxes!

Haha, a sales pitch. I wouldn't have expected a word-by-word translation anyway, your summary was sufficient and informative.

Around HKD800-850 (USD103-110).

I haven't compared many lenses but it seems the DX lenses like e.g. 18-105 and 18-140 at least are quite cheap here in HK, which generally isn't cheap at all (including electronics).

I would be curious as to how this lens compares to the 16-85

DxO Mark has a review of the 18-140; it compares well with the 16-85: noticeably better resolution, roughly the same in other metrics:

resolution distortion vignetting transmission chr. aberration

18-140 11 M-Px 0.7% -1.2 (EV) 5.5 (T-stop) 12

16-85 6 M-Px 0.4% -1.2 (EV) 5.2 (T-stop) 7

There overall "score" is 16 vs. the 16-85's 13. The major relative weakness is chromatic aberration.

Looking at all the reviews so far, including the one on dpreview, I think the biggest weakness of this lens is actually the distortion. Typical barrel as you would expect at the wide end but the pincusion distortion through the rest of the range sets new extremes.

Luckily it is easily dealt with in PP.

Looks to be very sharp throughout its range.

The 18-200mm just became redundant.

Just bought one on the strength of these comments, was after a 18-200 or 18-300 but can't get one cheap enough even second hand they're £300, just paid £203.00 new for 18-140 , gone for 140 cos I like. Length and it seems sharper than all the others ,I'll use my 80-200 2.8 for the long stuff
Just have to make my mind up over the sigma 120-400 or tamron 150-600 now....lol
