G1X tele and wide converters
Aug 14, 2013

I'm looking for tele and wide angle converters for my Canon G1X. Knowing that converters degrade IQ, I am looking for high quality converters. Are there any available?

I would forget wide angle converters, you'll just get bad vignetting whilst gaining little. I tried one of the best there is, the Olympus WCON-07 (the dinner plate) and that's all I got. The lens retracts too far when zooming out. If anyone has had better success with something else I'd be happy to be corrected. I'm not sure about tele converters I haven't found anyone using one yet.

Hi,

I've never used it, but I a poster called Lars Polar Bear who sometimes contributes to this forum has used the Siocore HD teleconverter and posted results.  They were very good indeed. I'm sorry but I don't have links.   The only downside was that the converter was quite large and has to be handled carefully on the G1X's filter adapter.  I would have been interested in the WA version, but unfortunately the distributor in Germany didn't deal with international sales.  (I'm in Australia.)

Good luck,

Rod

The danger of attaching any heavy glass to the plastic bayonet mount at the front of the G1X is pretty obvious, as others have noted. It seems to me that the ideal solution would be somehow to adapt a mount to the back end of the barrel by removing the lens trim ring. The only products I've been able to find that take advantage of this more solid mounting platform are the numerous auto-open lens caps on the market, though I think this is also intended for a ring flash mount. Is there any product out there that mounts to the back end of the lens barrel and provides front adapter threads for a wide- or tele-converter?

I do understand that this would be more difficult than it appears. Zooming causes the front element to move in and out relative to the camera body. This means that any such adapter would either only be usable at a specific zoom setting (presumably all the way to one end or other of the range), or would somehow provide the physical support for the converter while allowing it to float in and out with the lens. Is this simply too much to hope for?

Enrique,

yes, I am using the HD teleconverter and am quite happy with it. Siocore also offers a WA adapter and claims that there would be no vignetting (I have no experience with that one). I further have no experience with their standard products (non-HD)

Tele:

http://www.siocore.de/konverter/fuer-digitalkameras/tele-konverter/siocore-1-8x-hd-tele-konverter-tele-vorsatz-linse-canon-powershot-g1-x-bzw-g1x/a-87988413/

Wide Angle:

http://www.siocore.de/konverter/fuer-digitalkameras/weitwinkel-konverter/siocore-0-6x-hd-weitwinkel-konverter-vorsatz-linse-fuer-canon-powershot-g1x/a-87988411/

Since there were some people interested in this product I had asked them if they would deliver outside of Germany, but unfortunately they do not. However, I believe they are just a distributor and with some searching one might find other international distributors.

The tele-converter is not attached to the lens, but to the camera body, as done with the other G-Series Canon lenses. I had posted in the past several threads with my comments and pictures - just run a search for "G1X tele-converter". This one was my first: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/42608281

G1X with Siocore 1.8x tele-converter attached

Steinbock in German Alps. G1x + 1.8x tele + 1x digital zoom

G1x + Tele + 1x digital zoom

G1x + 1.8x Tele w/o digital zoom -> vignetting

G1x + 1.8x tele + digi zoom

G1x + 1.8x tele

G1X + Teleconverter

Hope that helps a little.

You might want to try buying it through Amazon Germany:

http://www.amazon.de/SIOCORE-DEFINITION-PROFI-WEITWINKELKONVERTER-PowerShot/dp/B00979AU1E/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1376671972&sr=8-8&keywords=Siocore+g1x

Perhaps they will deliver internationally...

Good luck

These are very interesting looking products, from what I can tell in translation. How do they handle the movement of the lens when zooming in and out? Do you have to use maximum zoom for the tele-converter and maximum wide angle for the wide angle converter?

Hi Papillon,

I'd be very interested to hear how it goes for you.

I'd also be interested to hear anything you can learn about the manufacturer and where it's made. If I google the name Siocore I get nothing but the German distributor and Amazon.de sites that we know about, but who don't deal elsewhere.  It just doesn't seem to exist anywhere else in the world.  It's a bit of mystery - I can't imagine that a German company has them made to their specs purely for their domestic market.  I would expect that they would be produced in numbers and sold under another brand name in other markets......  Maybe the packaging would cast some light on it?

Cheers, Rod

Rod, no problem, I didn't think I could order through Amazon.de but my order went through and has been confirmed. I'm having to use google translate to manage it (which works rather well now actually) but so far so good. I couldn't find any information elsewhere about these converters but the company involved (Siolex) seem to specialise in adaptors for the Canon G Series. The convertor also comes with a 15 year guarantee so build quality shouldn't be an issue! I hope it's as good as it looks, being an ultrawide shooter at heart this could be great for me, we'll see

Hi Tony,

please let us know who it goes and please post some picture once it has arrived (I am still contemplating to also buy the WA).  Quality is quite good, which on the other hand adds to the weight

My package did not indicate anything (just a white box), not even the country of production.  I guess having it delivered in the EU should not be a major problem, while getting it to Australia might still be a little more complex due to tax etc.  However, why not try it...

Have fun with you new toy!!

Hi Enrique,

I agree with you, if you also have a NEX or a m4/3 there is not much sense in getting the tele converter. The size and weight of it is comparable with a changeable lens (though might be cheaper).  This is especially true since the 200mm is a fixed focal length (no zoom).  I got the G1X since I wanted to have a small quality camera for scuba diving, where it has the most affordable casing.  For pure land use I would probably get a m4/3 (newest generation) with the 600mm zoom (35mm eq.) and a pancake zoom.  That would fit my usage in wildlife/nature (hiking/climbing) and city travel best.

Have fun hunting photos!!!

Hi Lars, I'm not too worried about size and weight as it looks like it has a very wide fov, it's a typical "dinner plate" style adaptor

Getting it to the UK shouldn't be a problem, I don't mind waiting a week or two if it does what I hope. I'll definitely post back about it either way and thanks for the Amazon tip
