Petzval Portrait lens 85mm f/2.2 in canon mount

I posted the same thing on the NIkon SLR lens forum..but since this lens will be available in canon mount as well..
I was wondering if i can achieve the same swirly effects of this lens (only $300 for the kick starter) by putting a clear UV filter and i put some "swirly" type marks with clear nail polish on the edge? I want this lens but it is only manual focus..
what do you guys think?

It won't be the same effect.  Something that this lens (and in some ways the lensbaby lenses) does is provide smooth transitions from in-focus to de-focused areas based on the imperfect nature of the optics.

It simply has a lot of spherical aberration.

Why don't you get one of the two Nikkor DC lenses? They allow you to control the amount of spherical aberration. On either side of the focus plane actually.
