7d problem shows "Err CF" and "Cannot write to card"

Hi All,

I am in a bit of a panic because my 7D has the above errors associated with my CF function. The top display says "Err CF" and the back display says "Cannot write to card." Anybody seen this before and found a way around it?

Here is what I have tried:

I have 3 CF cards, all have the exact same behavior error as mentioned above. The camera will lock all functions except for menu operations.

I have removed the battery and replaced it.

I am able to read the cards while in the camera and view files on them, so I am pretty sure that they are not the problem.

I removed the card and changed the mode to allow shooting without the card and the camera behaves normally and the shutter will fire, AF works and IS works on my lens.

I have changed operational modes using the mode dial, no difference in behavior

I have changed from my normal RAW mode to JPG and back with no change in behavior.

Live view has the same error messages.

Removing the lens and replacing it has the same error messages.

I have inspected the pins on the DF connector internal to the card slot and they look normal, no bent pins.

That's all I can think of now, I have done other things though. Thanks in advance for your help.

That is what will happen if the write protect tab on the card got moved to lock somehow.  Just a thought.

Re: 7d problem shows "Err CF" and "Cannot write to card"

I only format my CF cards in the camera. Currently, I cannot format the cards since the camera tells me I cannot write to the card.

I am away from home for a few days but when I get home, I will format the card in a PC.

As far as I can tell, there is no lock tab on these cards that I use.

Re: 7d problem shows "Err CF" and "Cannot write to card"

It's a long shot, but you could try removing the date backup button cell as well as the main battery. Leave both out the camera for a few minutes. You'll probably lose all custom settings if you do this though.

I've had card write errors 2 or 3 times in the three years I've owned a 7D, twice with the same card. Taking the main battery out cleared the problem each time.

Have you got firmware 2.03 installed? The errors I got were with older firmware.

If no pins are bent then one of them must have gotten pushed in. Take a look at this video:

Re: 7d problem shows "Err CF" and "Cannot write to card"

Thanks for the reply, I currently have FW 2.0. I was not aware of a later FW. I will try that if I can find the FW update.

The button cell? Where is that thing? I will have to google that I guess. I will try that first before the FW.

Re: 7d problem shows "Err CF" and "Cannot write to card"

I have taken a photo of the CF slot to inspect the pins. All seem normal (I am familiar with inspecting these types of images for my job.) except two pins on either side of the connector look "shorter" than the other pins. Here is a link to the photo:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/grogley/9274042633/

This may be normal for CF slots but since I have never inspected my previous cameras, I am not sure and I can't find anything online that says anything about the pin heights for CF.

Link for v2.0.3 from Canon USA:  http://consumer.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_7d#DriversAndSoftware

2.0.0 had some bugginess for some users and Canon released 2.0.3 shortly after (link above lists the release date as Sept. 13, 2012).

That is correct, those two are designed to be shorter.

Re: 7d problem shows "Err CF" and "Cannot write to card"

I had this very same problem with my camera of another brand. I sent it into warranty and they found corrosion on the main board so it had to be replaced. Not saying this is your problem, but you may have to send it in. Sorry, man!

Re: 7d problem shows "Err CF" and "Cannot write to card"

You didn't mention Read/Right speed of your cards. They've come out with faster cards since the 7D came out (800X and 1000X). Is it possible your card is not recognized by the 7D.

Re: 7d problem shows "Err CF" and "Cannot write to card"

All three cards I use exhibit the issue. I have been using them for 2 two year and always have worked fine. I have two Kingston 16GB 266x cards and one Transcend 32GB 400x card. These are not that old or fast that they should be a problem.

CF cards don't have a write protect tab.

Re: 7d problem shows "Err CF" and "Cannot write to card"

Thanks to all. I have tried everything I can think of and all your suggestions and still the camera is misbehaving. It looks like I will be dropping it off at the NJ service center on the way home from my trip. Argh!

The pins look the same as my 7D.
