XZ-1 underwater videos
Jul 12, 2013

Hello all,

I' ve been in Turkey since 2nd of July and keep stay here for a while. I finally got chance to make my PT-050 wet ! The results looks very staisfying on the XZ-1 ' s screen. But when I uploaded to Flickr it seemed not as good.

The focus was locked, and it was shallow water as 50cm. And sun was strong enought to make it bright.

I even try to watch it at HD (not full HD its 720p as you know)  but result still dissapointment.

What you folks recommend about sharper ımages underwater ?

Thanks for all recommendations.

Ben

I think the quality looks about right for XZ-1. In other words, its video sucks. At some point, I even feel like get my "HD" video converted to 480p because they don't really qualify as HD.

When you zoomed in, the video tends to go out of focus. I am not sure how manual focus works with zoom. I suppose the camera tries to compensate the focal length change. I would stick to F4.5 or smaller if needed.

wow I know the video is not the best, I found it focus hunted even on dry land but this surprised me , unfortunately nothing outstanding on YouTube confirms suspicion that is really is a stills camera. Makes the Nikon AW 100 look good and I went to video on that because the stills were hopeless :-(.

the biggest problem I had was sediment turbidity reducing visibility, you don't notice it as much while in the water or on the screen but once magnified it ruins an image.

Yep seems like I  am not the problem myself this tşme it is not the best video tool on its class, both on the land and underwater it seems... But stills were alright to me (without any additional light, they seems fine)

But i should keep apetture somewhere between 3,5 - 4,5 otherwise fısh move quicker than i estimated.

I also suffered about it but one technique surprisingly help that out. Somehow on its "art" way...

To me it looks like the inbuild codec is trying to keep the bitrate low no matter that eveyrhing in the scene is moving. This leads soft and somewhat blurry video. So I claim the softness is just result of too low bitrate and high video compression. Sad part is that there ain't much settings to choose with XZ-1 when shooting video.

I would downscale and apply sight sharpening so it would give the impressions it's more detailed video than it really is.

RAW video would be nice
