Bulbs for light tent
Jul 2, 2013

Hi,

I am sorting myself out a light tent to photograph some Jewellery for insurance purposes for some family members.

I'm not sure which bulbs will be best to use with the light tent for this sort of thing. Any tips please?

Thanks

Incandescent if colors are of critical importance.

CFLs if color isn't of critical importance but heat is a problem.

I'm just looking a clean light with good coverage. Would a mix of daylight and normal cfl work ok!

What daylight?

The color temperature of shade is not the same as North light which is not the same as direct sunlight which is not the same as cloudy daylight.

Mixing color temperatures is not a good idea.

If you are doing small products where color is important then you want to use either flash or incandescent so that you will be working with full spectrum light sources.

If color isn't important then you can work with CFL bulbs. I would recommend daylight but not cool daylight ones.

For lighting a tent with incandescent or CFLs you can use those cheap clamp on metal bowl reflector shop lights with the bulbs. Look for ones like these.

Here is a good tutorial for shooting jewelery in a light tent.
