Sun setting over a field in Överberg, a small village about 8km (5 mile) from where I live. I was just out walking randomly looking for shots in the sun set light and I happened to walk through the forests all the way here with three cameras on my shoulder. Didn't get the sun properly in this shot, but I just love the sky and the field looks decent too I think (even though it's much steeper than it looks here)

Been testing a new E-PM2.  It's the first Olympus camera I've used that has Dramatic Tone, so I've gone a bit mad.

Foggy morning
In reply to Rriley, Jun 30, 2013

Fog was a bit of a recurring theme when we visited Norway last weekend, fog and rain. That is something we hardly ever see on our side of the border here in Sweden. We may not have as stunning landscapes but we do have better weather and better roads This one is shot with the E-1 and 8 mm FE.

Like the deep colour in the image and the atmosphere added by the fog and mist.

Big Bloom in the Mountains
In reply to Rriley, Jul 1, 2013

Last week I posted a couple of close-up of this big Century Plant bllom. Some people know them as Yucca plants. It's also an agave, like the Mexican Agave plant. It's a member of the Lily Family, as is the Joshua Tree that grows in the desert a few dozen miles from here.

Here is the whole plant in bloom. The base grows long narrow green leaves and a massive starchy root for about 35 years (1/3 century). The spiked pointy leaves inflict a painfull prick in the shins if you accidentally walk into them. In unison, hundreds of these mature agaves will bloom all at once sending up 10 to 12 foot shoots in a couple of weeks. Bugs pollenate the white clusters of flowers for a couple of weeks before they fall off. A shiny green seed pod about the size and shape of a Roma tomato emerges. The seeds dry for several weeks before popping open and releasing their seeds into the wind. The porous light stalks remain standing on dead leafy plants for several years before falling over.

Two photos. One of the whole plant and another of the individual flower clusters on the stalk.

I really like the simplicity of this image.  At first I couldn't see a "flag" but then one looks closer and sees the rocks then the penny drops.  Great shot.

The first image reminded me of when I was in Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1978 with that brown cloud base.  Interesting image, the freeway and building site suggest a country in modernisatiion mode.

Big Bloom species defined

Zin sent me a link to Joshua Tree National Monument with info describing the species and family that all agave, century plants and joshua trees belong to.

"The Joshua Tree, a symbol of the Mojave Desert can live to between 100 and 300 years and grows to a height of 30 feet (9 m), with a 3-foot (1-m) diameter. Long thought to be members of the agave family, the Joshua Tree and all yuccas have recently been reclassified as members of the Lily (Liliaceae) Family. Like all yucca, Joshua Trees rely on the Pronuba moth (Tegeticula yuccasella) to pollinate its creamy cluster of white flowers." Credit: Linda & Dr. Dick Buscher
