D800 live view focus slow and noisy

I have used live view twice now once for stills on a tripod and once hand held video.

Focus seems slower in live view than through the view finder. There is also a slight clicking noise from the lens which seems slightly noisier in live view.

This is not a problem except when recording movies when I touch the focus on button I end up with a click on the sound track.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Re: D800 live view focus slow and noisy

Focus in live view uses contrast detection, just like compact point and shoot cameras or mobile phones do. So it will always be a LOT slower than the focus using the viewfinder. Viewfinder-based focus is called "phase detection" and it is very fast, but also less accurate. However, it can be used for tracking subjects, which live view can't.

Basically Nikon have allowed you to choose:

Phase detection (viewfinder) - very fast, can track subjects, but can be inaccurate

Contrast detection (live view) - slower, can't track things, but extremely accurate

Try reading page 47 of the instruction book for confirmation LiveVew is slower and also when AF may not focus accurate.

also, not being an expert at all with video, i would suggest that manual focus should be used when shooting video.

If you are still hearing the clicking noise while in live view, it might be due to the auto AE. Press the "ok" button it goes away (if that was your problem)

On occasion, I have used LV to continuously track faces. The technology in the D800 has improved somewhat as compared to previous DSLRs, but there is definitely room for improvement.
