The OMD does the Red Carpet ......
Jun 10, 2013

Rebecca Dalton and Holly Deveaux from the series Spun Out

Had the opportunity to shoot the red carpet for CTV's 2013 Upfront last Friday.

An upfront is when a TV network invites advertisers and Media Buyers to a giant day-long event to preview their upcoming season.
Performers from various shows are on hand at press conferences in the morning and then for a gala affair at The Sony Centre in the late afternoon.

These are from the media area for the red carpet at the gala presentation.

I used the E-M5 with the 14-150mm mZuiko, mainly at the tele end of the zoom, with an Olympus FL-50R flash dialed back 2/3's of a stop with an amber warning gel taped to the flash head and blended in Aperture Priority with ambient overhead LED lighting.

Last year it was a beautiful warm sunny day and all the photographers complained about having to shoot the red carpet inside the Sony Centre.
This year they put it outside outside and it's freezing cold, windy and raining. Probably the last time they listen to us about anything ; )

It's kind of an interesting event because most of the shows are new with no track record. You shoot some actress you've never heard of before and 6 months later she's a big star of a hit series.

Last year we did Hayden Panetierre for a show called Nashville. Some of the photogs said she had a role in Heroes, but basically no one really knew who she was or what the show was about, and of course Nashville turned out to be a big hit and we very much know who Hayden Panetierre is today.

There are also a few actors from established shows on hand.

A.J. Cook and Shemar Moore from Criminal Minds get frisky on the red carpet.

Interesting side discussion amongst the photographers present while waiting for the next starlet to come down the carpet, as everyone cataloged a wide assortment of aches, pains and back problems from lugging full frame gear around all day long.

This is a serious career-limiting problem for full time shooters.

She is a cutie, and very nice.

All the talent were nice, considering their hair was being blown all over the place, it was raining and it felt like about ten degrees out.
Might've been because there was just a half dozen or so of us. When you do something like TIFF there are a hundred photographers all barking 'turn this way', 'to your left', etc.
The talent tends to look shell-shocked after a while.

This was nice and casual and if you needed it most of the talent would do a quick do-over for you.
I like this event.

On Sunday I'm doing the MMVA's (Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato, Avril Lavigne, Ed Sheeran etc.)
It will be more like the film festival, so I opted for the live performance portion of the show and gave the circus in the media room to a 2nd shooter.

I'm doing Taylor's concert the night before in the Rogers Centre as well, so lots of live performance shooting with the Micro system coming up.

Cheers,

Really nice photos. I also like that you were not afraid to use ISO 800 even with the flash.

Nice pics, as usual, Doug.

Interesting that there are no (significant) hot spots from the flash. Is that because you were so far away? And/or the celebrities know to put make-up on their face? In general, are flash hot spots an issue that you need to think about when you shoot these events?

In general, they are all professionally made up, almost certainly not by themselves but by dedicated make-up artists.
With the right make-up flash hot spots are really minimal, and blending ambient and flash exposures ensures that the range of contrast on the face is somewhat muted.

That said, I did lightly airbrush Erica Durance's forehead in one small spot, and Chandra West's nose -  mainly because her agent complained about another photographer's photo of her at the event and demanded it be taken down, so I fixed a spot on her nose because who needs the aggravation of Hollywood agents on your case : )

But other than that they are as is.

It is unusual to have problems, like major problems not small areas, with hot spots at these events. They use some of the best make-up artists in the world for these red carpets because the photos are distributed far and wide for quite some time after the event.

Cheers,
