Sharpest lightweight UWA lens in the corners of FX around F/5.6-11?
Jun 5, 2013

What is the absolute sharpest lens corner to corner on FX under 19mm and under 900g ? And which one is the best value (performance/price) ? Max aperture is not important.

I am using a D800 and the wide angle lenses I currently own are the Nikkor 20/2.8 AI-S and the Nikkor 24-70/2.8 AF-S. I am looking for something a little wider (around 16-18mm), especially for landscapes and some architecture, and that doesn't weight more than 900g (2 pounds).

either the nikon 16-35 f4 (680 grams) or the new nikon 18-35 G (385 grams).  both the nikon 14-24 and tokina 16-28 are sharper in the corners but heavier than what you specify and both flare really badly.  there is the zeiss 18mm 3.5, but the new nikon 18-35g has almost exactly the same resolution characteristics as the zeis, is lighter, is a zoom, is much less expensive, has 77mm filter threads instead of 82mm, etc...

the new 18-35 measures as more even across the frame, while the 16-35 can achieve higher peak sharpness in the center.

here are the same figures for the 20 2.8 (af version, but should be the same optics as your current lens)

There is no answer. Wide angles are tough designs and the d800 is ruthless at exposing their weaknesses in the corners. The only two ultrawides that I'd deem having really good corner sharpness at the 18mm and below are the 15mm Zeiss and 14-24 Nikkor, both of which fall outside your weight/size parameters. You're going to have to give up either performance or weight - take your pick, although some folks like the Tokina zoom...

Thanks for the response. The Nikon 18-35 4.5-5.6 looks like a really good compromise between quality, weight and price !

Yes, the 15mm Zeiss and the Nikkor 14-24 are definitely some of the best ultra wide angles around, but you pay price and the weight.

What about the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm F/2.8 UMC ? How does it compare to the Zeiss 15mm stopped down ? 14mm (or 15) might be a little too wide for my use, I would ideally get something in the 16-18mm range... The Nikon AF-S 18-35mm F/4.5-5.6 looks tempting for the price/weight.

Thanks again!

If you get the Samyang, buy two - you can't get them serviced easiliy and they are built like you-know-what (curse word).

I unfortunately haven't been able to get my hands on the new 18-35 to evaluate it, so I can't say much about it.

You're right that 14/15mm is crazy wide....

As others have said, the Nikon 18-35G is probably your best option, I like mine a lot. Color/contrast/flare resistance are all excellent.

I also have a Rokinon 14/2.8 and it is terrible in the corners (maybe a bad copy).

I would definetly check out the Nikon 18-35G.  I'm not sure if you made a typo, but it's a 3.5-4.5 lens.
