I held the A at a store

I think it feels much cheaper than the 1 series, but I liked the LCD. The AF is very sluggish (also compared to the V1 I had with me in the same lighting conditions).

Let's hope Nikon make it better on the next iteration, especially AF and built. I wouldn't mind it being a bit larger, thicker, sturdier, with a faster lens.

Did you also compare IQ with the 1 series?

Yes the 1 series is super fast.  Faster than any other compact out there.  But it is much less cheap than the 1 series.  I mean the lenses for the 1 are rubberly and loose.

The A is tight.

At any rate, the sensor is much laerger on the A and that is the point.

I didn't need to, I have the D7000, which would be similar in IQ. I know the difference, and I would be a owner if only the AF were faster. For many situations the V1 is enough, especially trips, otherwise I can use the D7000. I can see someone liking it, but it's still a sluggish compact.

I think you haven't used the primes on the V1. They are very well built. The zooms are ok, some say the 30-100 is excellent optically, I don't have it. I use mostly the 10 f/2.8, which makes the V1 like a compact. Of course the IQ is not at the level of the A, but that's why I'm frustrated. If it were faster, especially AF (I like shooting people, street, candids, I need the speed), I would get one to replace the V1, in a second.

I own the A, and have played with the 1 series cameras - I think the A has a pretty solid build.  Any benefit the 1 series might have in this area is small - drop either camera from a distance, and it's going to sustain damage.  The only negative aspect worth talking about when comparing the A to the 1 series is AF speed - the AF speed of the 1 series is much better.  However, the IQ of the A is really outstanding, much better than the 1 series, especially given the size of the A.  It really boils down to what your needs and expectations are.  I love my Coolpix A, even with its slow AF.

You mean cheaper than the V1?  Cuz I don't see how ANYTHING could feel cheaper than the J1/2/3.
