Firmware upgrade causes AF slow down on 18-55!
May 23, 2013

Just did upgrade and now the AF on my 18-55mm is slow as hell.  Anyone else experience the same problem?

What a FW Version is on your 18-55 ?   1.01 ?

Did you update the body with the lens connected ?  You should not do that !

Fuji say nothing about having the lens connected if one updates firmware, only to not remove the lens during the process.

I don't get what Helmus was saying either.  Are we supposed to have just a body cap on body, when updating??

Not really

My 18-55mm is desperately slow at 55mm dim light and often does not lock but FW upgrade didn(t change that

In normal light the 18-55mm has always been really slower than others 18 and 35mm and is still slower It's not my copy because at my dealer when i bought it I notices that too

The 60mm in dim light is faster and also locks anyway even if very very slow, very few misses

Mine is fine, at either 18mm or 55mm. I had the lens on during the upgrade, only took it off for the first step.

If you don't have the 55-200, is there any reason to apply this update?

Nonsense. As long as you make the right selection you are fine.

But you do need the latest lens FW to go with the body FW.

My 18-55 seems to focus fine now, haven't upgraded yet.

Hey Baobob, are you sure your 18-55 is working properly? The linear motor should make it focus faster than the primes. My 18-55 is considerably faster than my 35mm (in any lighting conditions). It's locking on in a fraction of a second.

True in bright light not true in dim light I have tried several copies they are all similar

All in all find the 18 and 35mm faster in avreage lighting conditions

In very dim light the 60mm can achieve focus where the 5mm does not

No miracle, 2.8 instead of 1.4; 4 instead of 2.4

On Fuji site under FW update instructions says:

Turn the camera on while holding down the [BACK] button, while XF lens is not attached to the camera body.

So if you are doing FW update for body, you should remove lens before you start update.

To do the update, without a connected lens, was a part of the 1.04 FW install instuction, which was attached to the 14mm lens.

Sorry...

There are differing instructions.

I assume this was written because people were making the wrong selection between lens and body.

But I generally update the body FW before attaching a new lens anyway. However I have not so far had a problem if there was an old lens attached at the time.

It works either way, but this way it ensures people do not accidentally overwrite the camera firmware, which would disable the camera, by choosing the wrong menu option.

I am sure it has happened a few times.

True, but the 18-55 has a much shorter focus throw, and in good light mine is definitely pretty fast.

I will skip this upgrade as I will never buy the 55-200. I consider the 18-55 focus to be fast especially since I came to the Fuji via the Leica X1 which is very slow.

I have always done firmware updates with a lens attached but as noted it is important to pick body or lens.

Good luck to all who need this upgrade for eventual 55-200 use.

My purchase of the 55-200mm lens will be linked to a reasonable fast AF since this lens will be used to catch fast action from a distance

If it is not the case I'll continue buying fantastic old glass may be a 200m I already ordered a 135mm 3.5 compact in size pure MF....

Good choice. I was surprised to get good results from my old B&H/Canon FD 135 f1:2.5 S.C. using an adapter to my X-Pro1.  It's not what could be called a lightweight lens (probably heavier than the new 55-200mm) but it gave me immense pleasure to get good results from a lens that had been on a shelf with all of my old film Canon stuff.

I don't know enough about the physics of it all that would make a 135mm lens fill the frame with these sensors but it does it. Too bad I couldn't get the Fuji manual focus assist to switch on with the old lens attached. That would have been perfect.

I'd bought the adapter to use my FD 50mm F:1.4 SSC on a Canon bellows to photograph stamps to sell, and tried the 135 just for kicks.

I already got a tamron 90mm 2.5 macro and its ext tube to get up to 1:1 ratiomacro, a 17mm Tokina that will go with the tilt and shift Kipon adapter that should arribe in 2-3 days and ordered the Pentax K mount 135mm 3.5 that hyas got good reputation

If the AF of the 55-200mm is not fast enough a 200mm f4 costs in Minolta or pentax 60€....

The EVF with 3 or 10x allows rather easy focus handheld wide open
