"Fundamental reason" presumes there exists only one.

"Reasons for doing something" is one of those topics where if you lock four people in a room to discuss it, you end up with five differing opinions after an hour, and two dozen after a day.

Visual creative outlet as I can't draw or paint!
In reply to jason08, May 17, 2013

To me that's my primary reason.

I can think of a few reasons:

  • Communication
  • An aid to memory
  • Propaganda
  • Capturing the Beautiful
  • Making money
  • Publicity
  • Artistic expression
  • Documentation
  • Egotism, snobbery, showing off
  • An excuse to be around attractive models or visit lovely places
  • As a way of meeting new and interesting people
  • Furthering knowledge
  • Illustration
  • Enjoying the art of photography

There is undoubtably a lot of overlap here, and this is not exhaustive.

It's a creative output.

It makes for good outings with colleagues.

Ok, so that's more more than one reason...
