My adventure with the 100-400L + 1.4 ex II
11 months ago

I went out on Friday to try an 100-400lL + 1.4 ex II with the Canon new firmware. My first impression is the AF is kinda slow. You almost have to pre-focus. I also lost focus if I try to do high-speed continuous shot.

This is my result

great shots, did you use a tripod?  Considering a 2.0 ex?

To be fair that's a hummingbird!    Tough job for any focusing system, nice shots!

Ciao,
I tried on the same body+100/400 the ext 1, 4 tcIII.
It is slower than my kenko dgx pro1, 4 and with canon tc the camera allow just single point af.
With kenko i can use all the af points....
I'll keep the kenko.
...PS sorry for my bad english

You've done well.

I usually would not even try an extender on the 100-400 due to the slow focus speed and deterioration of IQ.

You got away with hit here.

nice photos, hummers are very difficult birds to take good picture of because of their feathers that change color and texture even when they move around. i have been relatively successful to take some nice photos of the hummer only one time after numerous attempts

cheerz.

No tripod. all handheld. I would not consider the 2x extender. It was hard enough with the 1.4
