Big birds and little birds in Florida - Feeding and Fighting
In reply to steelhead3, May 5, 2013

Picking up where I left off last week, we've been getting good wading bird action with lots of them here to nest and mate, and some here for the summer which is already here in Florida - and still just a few of the small migrating birds who are almost gone, the last of them working their way north.  All shots A580 & Minolta 300mm F4 APO & APO II 1.4x TC:

This great blue heron got himself one heck of a large fish

He spent a long time walking around with it, trying to figure out how to swallow it down - eventually he had to put it down and start hacking it apart with his pointy bill

Despite being white, this bird is actually a 'little blue heron'.  When they're young, they start out white and slowly convert over to the dusky blue color they're known for and named for

The pretty little prairie warbler, one of the last of the migrators that headed through my area

The bold yellow color and black contrasting stripes make the prairie warbler a lovely subject to photograph

Colorful purple gallinule, climbing out on a reed to get to the flower buds

Partially leucistic grackle - she's supposed to be all brown

This is a lesser yellowlegs - a pretty little shorebird who likes to visit the wetland shallows to feed

Moorhens look pretty peaceful - but when two of them have a dispute, their fights can be violent and mean looking!

These guys could qualify for mixed martial arts league

Strange - guess a temporary glitch.  I posted, but don't post from lightroom so it worked OK for me.

South Florida birding
In reply to steelhead3, May 5, 2013

As zachiedawg says, summer is here in South Florida, and the heat cut my excursion short this week. But I did finally get a roseate spoonbill in flight, and there were some pretty cute black-necked stilt babies watched over by their diligent parents (dad even scared off a gator).

Most shots slightly cropped and minor PP.

Roseate spoonbill, really pretty in flight (not my best shot, but a cool subject)

There were 4 baby black-necked stilts, watched over by a pair of protective parents

OK, so I screwed up and forgot to change settings and took this with too slow of a shutter speed. But since I was panning with him pretty well, it came out with a cool background movement effect.

Great egret, my sharpest BIF shot of the day.

All taken with the A37 & old Sigma DL 75-300. I stopped by the Sony store to compare my cheap lens with the Sony 55-300, and the increased sharpness of the Sony was pretty dramatic. So a lens upgrade is definitely on my wishlist (the Tamron 200-500 is also mighty appealing).

I got the 55/300mm with my A57 and it is faster and sharper than my 75/300SAL..Much improved and more zoom...Justin, those are some great captures. We must hang out in the same swamps..I have seen those Moorhens go at it but was never able to capture it..Good job! Jimmymac

In reply to steelhead3, May 5, 2013

I've been away cycling, so didn't get out much this past week.  Pretty much the routine stuff - all with A-77 and BBC.

Male American Goldfinch - very gold

Doe munching new shoots

Eastern Chipmunk atop a very dead stump

Same Chipmunk - new pose

Carolina Chickadee in the rain

Eastern Chipmunk on a wet log

Groundy - soaking up the rays

Ruby-throated Humming Bird - 1st of 2013

IMO, that's your best set in a while Justin.  All with really nice color and filling the frame.  That is some fish the GBH caught.  I've seen them catch them too big, but never seen one hack it up into pieces

Excellent shots of the Moorhens and very instructive comentary.

Nice shootin!

Excellent set with a nice variety and sharpness.  You must be loving the 500mm on the A-57.  Is that the Tamron 200-500mm?

Nice shot of the hummer at 1/80th.  I suppose I'll be trying that now that they have returned from central America.

Nice in flight shots (Spoonbill looks fine to me but I wasn't able to view at 100%) and a real cutie of the little Stilt.

First 4 shots are experimental shots, my first outing with A77 + my new Sony 70-400mm G1. It will hopefully get better by time, but they look good to go already

Moorhens mating

Who said this is ugly?

Moorhens

A couple of shots from early days if last weak, with A77 + Sony 20mm/2.8

You better believe it it's the perfect double whammy for birding, even better than my A35 and that's a pretty tough act to follow. It even shoots well on cloudy days, so I'm a reeeeal happy lil minx!
