Upgrading Nikon D80 to D5200? or D7200? - will lenses transfer?
May 4, 2013

I have a Nikkor AF-s 18-135mm DX lens and a Tamron AF XR DI LD 28-300mm lens that I used with the D80. Will those lenses work on the D5200 and D7200?

I would also like opinions as to whether the D7200 is worth the extra cost over the D5200?

I am a hobbyist - don't know much about photography but am trying to learn.

thanks,

Sandi

Hi Sandi,

its a D7100

is the Tamron AF XR DI LD 28-300mm a screw-drive lens ? If so it will not auto-focus on the D5100. The Nikkor would though.

both lenses should be fine on the D7100 as far as I can see.

is the D7100 worth the extra cost over the 5100?  Depends. It the answer was a straight "yes" they wouldn't sell any 5100s.  The image quality would be very similar.  You'd be paying for the extra features of the D7100.  For me, it's a YES (I just bought one to replace my D50).  For others maybe not so.

Your 18-135 with work with both cameras you ask about; it is an AFS lens which means it has a built in focus motor. The D5200 doesn't have a focus motor so it can only auto-focus with AFS (common) and AFI (rare) lenses. The D7200 has a focus motor built in so it can auto-focus with any auto-focus lens made by Nikon (AF, AFI, AFS, AFD). For maximum lens compatibility go with a camera like the D7200 and stay away from the entry level cameras such as the D5200.

The Tamron is another matter. I'm not sure. I think Tamron uses the letter combo of USD (ultra sonic drive) or PZD (paisano drive    ) on some lenses to indicate having a built in motor. I don't think your lens has such a motor. If not then you need to go with the D7200 over the D5200 if you want to auto-focus with it. The newest Tamron 28-300 has the built in motor....I guess it all comes down to how old your copy is. Tamron has been a bit confusing with this issue where some lenses are labeled and some are not, it's a real mess.

Both of the previous replies sort  of answer your question, but I would like to clear up some details.

D5100 16 megapixels

D5200 24 megapixels

D7100 24 megapixels

I believe you are asking about the two 24megapixel models. Your AF-S 18-135 will auto focus on either model, but I'm guessing that the Tamron is old enough to be of the AF D type of Nikon auto focus which needs a motor in the camera. If that is the case then only the D7100 will auto focus that lens.

Is the D7100 worth the extra $ over the D5200? If you use auto ISO, and always shoot in P, A, or S mode you will not notice the differences in control. Me, I would never consider anything below the D7100 (disclaimer: I use a D7000, and a D90).

heh heh....Sandi writes 7200 and I just blindly follow suit. Yes, of course, we both meant the D7100.

The feature set of the D80 is much closer to that of the D7100 (dual controls, top LCD, body size &c), so for that reason alone I would argue that you will want to upgrade to that rather than lose those features. You then don't need to worry about lens compatibility! (Though 24MP is a lot - I'm not sure how well your lenses would resolve any 24MP sensor, D5200 or D7100...)

The Nikkor will function on either camera.  You will have an option to get the 18-105 kit lens that may be a better lens on a 24mp camera. You may also want to upgrade to 16-85 if that suits your shooting style.

The Tamron with the AF-D style AF will be best on a 7100 over the 5200. You may also get a package deal to include a Nikkor 70-300 VR when you buy your camera.

Because of the extra controls, AF-S, commander flash, the 7100 does carry a premium price over the 5200. If your budget does not allow for lens upgrades + Camera, you could go with the 5200 with the 18-105 kit lens & use that to rebuild your collection of good glass.

For a casual shooter, the less expensive 5200 may be fine for you. Both cameras get high IQ scores.

Sandi,
I think you will get more useful advice if you can tell us why you want to upgrade. Other than low-light image quality, what aspects of the D80 do you think you would like to be improved?

Doesn't the D5200 have AF-S, too?
