Anybody had this error message before? If so, is there a fix besides bringing the printer to the nearest Epson authorized service center (in the next state)?

Looking through the 3800 service manual I get the impression this is likely to be a problem with the image sensor that is used to analyze the printer test pattern for nozzle check and other alignment checks. If so I expect it's going back to Epson unless you can find a service guy who will come to your home. They do exist apparently.

if the viewing eye gets polluted by ink and ink residue you should perform a manual printhead cleaning as Jose describes it perfectly

put a damp (with windex) paper towel or cloth underneath the printhead and repeat it until you get a a clean wipe (oh the resemblence)
