...is it just too problematic?  Can you suggest a reasonably priced service that restores old images?  Thank you, John

Pixel, this edit is amazing.  How in the heck did you do it?  I didn't think it would be possible to get anything even close to what you came up with.  Fantastic!!!...............Ralph

How it was done:

Used calculations on the red channel in overlay mode to increase contrast and copied the result and used it as a new layer.

Selected the stains and used a curve to lighten until they matched the surrounding areas.

Used an inverted highpass layer to soften the picture.

Used the stamp tool to restore detail.

Used the dust and scratches filter to remove some of the roughness.

Used a filter to remove noise.

Did a lot of dodge and burn to even out things (shapes).

That's it.

Well, I guess this is pretty good, but at least you could have colorized it, rendered it in 3D, and then animated it into a 90 minute wide-screen movie directed by John Ford and co-starring John Wayne!!! ;-))

Truly an amazing restoration!!! How did you do it?

ACR for contrast, darks and lights then converted to B&W; in CS6, used the clone tool, healing brush and cut/paste to repair; coloured mostly with gradient maps (soft light mode) and masks, touched up with a brush in colour mode; blended channels via Apply Image, NIK and Topaz filters on duplicate layers and applied selectively via masks; sharpening and texture.
