Need your Opinion, d700 trade
Apr 27, 2013

Someone has offer to trade my d700 body for a d7000 with a Nikon 18-200mm Vr II lens. My d700 has approximately 19k click his d7000 about 9k. Would that be a good move value wise?, does anyone in the forum owns both? Also which one would give me the IQ? Thanks in advance.

I agree, not to mention keeping full frame.

Keep the D700
In reply to NewGuyBri, Apr 27, 2013

I've had both Keep the D700. Also, here in Toronto you could buy that D7000 for $700 and the lens for about $400. You'd have to settle for a VR not VR2, but no optical or VR difference You won't get a D700 here for $1100. Or $1200. Or $1300.

A Nikon d7000 w/o 18-200mm will never give you the same IQ as a D700 with even a crappy lens. Not even close!

D700 is better in build quality, precision and speed of AF, low light performance, and color reproduction. It is also a pro quality camera all around. D7000 is good overall, but it cannot touch D700. The only reason to choose D7000 over D700 would be if you needed the DX crop factor and pixel density for distance shooting, but then I would take D300 over D7000 any time unless you also need the improved low light performance over D300. You also may not know whether this particular D7000 suffers from the fairly prevalent back-focus problem. So, like the others have said, stick with your D700, it is a quality camera which will last. I actually find that the price of used D700 after D800 introduction to be quite a bit less than it is truly worth. It might be unfortunate if you're looking to sell or trade, but it is a huge benefit for those looking to buy. If I didn't already own a D700, I would buy a used one in a blink of an eye, -- it is just too good all around.

No deal.

D7000 (even with a kit lens and a few less clicks) vs. D700 is a losing trade for the D700 owner.

Value wise they are about equal based on UK prices.

Comparing my sold D3s to my still owned D7000 there is absolutely no question about it - the D7000 provides usefully more image resolution, and greater dynamic range.

Depending on your photographic needs (only you know what these are) either combination could be the better option for you.

I own both.  I bought a used D700 recently after owning a D7000 for a couple of years.  At base ISO, I don't notice any difference in IQ.  The D7000 claims a higher dynamic range, and I suspect that if I did a controlled test, I might notice that.  What I do notice is the much better IQ of the D700 at high ISO.

The resolution (12MP vs. 16MP) isn't that big of a deal to me.

The U1 and U2 settings on the D7000 are great!  I miss them when shooting with the D700.  Overall, I prefer the controls and setting options of the D7000 to the D700, but they may have more to do with my longer experience with the D7000 than anything.

I never had any autofocus problems with my D7000; however, the autofocus system on the D700 is obviously better.

I have not ever owned the 18-200mm VR lens.

The proposed trade seems fairly even.  It really boils down to what your needs are.  If you're looking to lighten your load and simplify your system, then the trade might be a good deal.  However, as others have already pointed out, the D700 is obviously a better camera body than the D7000.

If I were limited to only one body, go with the D700 at this point.

Oh Boy - this is a no-brainer.  I recently tried the D800/600, as I was thinking of upgrading.  After a week I sent them both back.  No way they stacked up (as an all round camera), to my D700.  After lots of testing and comparing, I even sold my beautiful mint D3x about two weeks ago.  After using so many different cameras, over so long and trying all the new offerings - the D700 is the hands down winner. I will happily use this camera for the next however many years.

It is your decision, but I feel that you are not so captivated by the image quality of the D7000, but you are more worried about keeping up with the changes and the latest whiz-bang gizmo.  Don't be worried that the D700 is 5 years old or whatever.  I am going to happily pass this recent incarnation (D600/800/4), and wait the next 4 years or whatever and see what they can come up with.  I am still stunned by the images that it produces, and for my travels/website/style of photography, the D700 is the very best for what I do, and 12mp is plenty.

Until then, I am still going to be blasting out great images from my D700.

Sorry to say but claiming D700 to be a better camera than D800 or even D600 sounds quite over enthusiastic to me . I owned D3 and D700 since day one of their release, but D800 simply blows them both away.
D700 was a very nice camera back in 2008, but for various reasons it is outdated to me. Cripled live view being one of them, no movie mode as another one, and there is more... Also D7000 live view is a century ahead of D700...

I also had D7000 next to my D700 and at base iso D7000 has better IQ than D700, but from iso 320 upwards D700 is better and the difference becomes bigger while going into higher isos. D700 iso 3200 looks like D7000 iso 800.
