Welding
Apr 26, 2013

I had a little welding project to do and since I never shot any welding before, I though it would be a good time to experiment. So, I set up my tripod and my D600 to a 20 second timer and here's what I came up with.
It would be MUCH easier shooting someone else while they are welding, but you gotta do what you gotta do
Shot with a D600 and Nikkor 105mm F2.5 lens.

Nikon D600

Here's one of the few places I'd put on a protective filter!

Weldin'! ... I mean, well done! You found just the right exposure to emphasize the interesting colours, and to allow the eye to move around the picture without being constantly forced back to the bright spot.

Terrific shot. I wouldn't want to be the one looking through the viewfinder, though. Also, its the perfect application for the D600 as you aren't gonna notice the $%#@ (I'll shut up now)

Seriously, though, I really liked the shot.

Excellent result and technique, i like the colors, beside the trails obviously, the framing is not perfect but almost a miracle, since you say it s a "self portrait".

The world can never have too many good welding pics.

Perfect exposure, and I love the colors.

Having just bought a D600, I'm thrilled to finally be seeing some threads about all the GOOD that this camera can do, instead of issues with that-which-shall-not-be-named...

Great shot-----I know you were doing it for fun----I look at it as a pro and say wouldn't that be a cool shot for an advertiser for the brand of coat you were wearing---wouldn't be nice to get the logo!!    Always looking for the money shot!

Nice work!!!

Thanks everyone, glad you liked it!  I think I'll hold off on shooting more welding photos until I read up on how the arc affects the camera's sensor though.  Wouldn't want to wreak my D600!

Thank you.  I've been wanting to get into the pro side for some time now.  I usually shoot landscapes and wildlife and there isn't much money to be made there.

I HAVE shot all 3 of my sisters weddings, but I don't think I'd want to be a wedding photographer.  I am much more comfortable out in wilds than being cooped up with a bunch of people I don't know

I set up a stock photo account a few months ago.  I guess I should start uploading some photos to my account.  It would help to pay for lenses anyway
