Thanks.  Just for me to put things into perspective, what are some even better ones (not saying CCleaner is not)?  What is the main difference between the free version and the paid version (I plan to buy something)?

I use to have EvidenceNuker but this one is not good with Win 7 (used to have Win XP).

Stay with the free one -  the other versions are for networks.

There's an addon called CCenhance which extends it's scope a lot, but it takes some learning.

Wise Disc cleaner are quite well regarded.

There are a lot of all in one optimization suites out there - Iobit and Glary are worth a look.

I no longer use any of these - just Ccleaner & a defrag.

Thanks again.  One other thing.  I download from CNet...is this a CNet thing or an Eraser or CCleaner thing?  Something is not right here:

If it is the CNet plug-in, how do I get rid of it?  I lciked No twqice to term sof sgreement and finally got a screen that did not display that agreement anymore.   But may have missed it when trying out CCLeaner.

That's CNet for you - they have quite rep for bundling garbage in with their software. That one is among the worst I've seen from them, though - really unpleasant. Use filehippo instead - they don't seem to do this.

proseak gave you the link for CCleaner, but you need this one too;

http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

and also

http://www.filehippo.com/download_spybot_search_destroy/5168/

That Eula is really quite poisonous, isn't it? Malwarebytes and/or Spybot should kill it for you.

Avoid Cnet in the fiture - filehippo, tucows, majorgeeks are a few that I've found to be much, much better.

Forget the Win based offerings!

The only way to be 100% sure of wiping everything from a hard drive so it can never be recovered is to do so at DOS level!  An excellent freebie from Terabyte will do this for you.  Just download, make a CD or floppy as self-booting and just change, for this, via BIOS setup, to boot from whichever you choose to create.  They offer a Win based one too but my advice would be to always opt for the base DOS version so as to be 101% sure of a total non-recovery wiping action.

Out of extra interest - most Hard Drive manufacturers also offer similar total-wipe utilities.
