D7100 - 70-300 or the new 70-200 f4?
Apr 20, 2013

Hi guys & gals.. I want to buy a zoom for my new 7100 for general zoomed subjects, and the occasional outdoor sports events.

Aside from the cost differential, I was wondering if anyone has had the opportunity to compare them for picture quality and the possibility of using them with a TC-14.

Just seen that the 70-300 cannot be used with the TC-14....

unless you need the extra 100mm i'd go with the 70-200/f4 anyday of the week

Hi David,

I have the D7100, 70-300VR and 70-200/F4

for sporting events the faster lens is better, of course, and in this respect the F2.8 version would be even better, but it's bigger, heavier and even more expensive.

I wrote two posts comparing them here

I am well pleased with the 70-200/F4 !
By the way since it is slightly bigger than my 70-300 and I had to also buy a new camera holster to transport my new gear. (Kata Access PL-A-18) This holster is big enough to carry the 70-200/f4 in a side pocket so I can walkaround with say a 17-50 on the camera and switch over to the 70-200 tele when needed. very convenient.

However, it will work with the Kenko Teleplus 1.4x extender...

I'd prefer that set-up as well, and match it with the kenko 1.4 when needed.

I traded my 70-200 f2.8 VRII in on the f4 version.  I found the f2.8 was getting too heavy running up and down the field when doing school sport photography.  I now use the D7100 with the 70-200 f4 and am more than happy.  I own the 70-300 VR as well - Great lens but maybe a little slow for sports, depending what sport of course.
