Just out of curiosity how do you know the spots are oil and not dust?

Don't Panic! Yet.

My D800E had what were probably oil spots when new. For the first 1,000 shots I was mostly fooling around, trying all my lenses, and getting used to the camera, so I didn't bother cleaning it immediately. When I finally did a wet cleaning, that solved the problem. I'm up to around 6,000 shots and haven't needed to clean it yet.

I had a similar experience with my D700.

My point being that some initial oil spotting is normal for Nikon FX DSLR's lately. It does not have to mean you have a defective D600.

Bertrand, I honestly think the worst, this is my second D600, the first one did quite well, 5oo shots before oil started spilling all over the place, I am seriosly p-ssed off!

I can imagine you're hacked off and I would be, too. Thanks for passing it on and I would send it back if it is within a reasonable time.

If you are USA I am reasonably sure you are entitled to a replacement or your money back without a re-stocking fee from the retailer.

In the EEC you seem definitely entitled to a replacement or your money back from the retailer.

I assume this is a 100% crop. Some look like they could be oil but the solid ones look like dirt or dust. Oil usually doesn't look solid black. In any case, if you are unhappy you should be able to send it back.

What is left?

Well I have been following all these posts for the last few weeks with great interest, because I recently decided to get a full frame Nikon, in order to take advantage of my legacy Nikkor lenses in their native focal lenghts and get full frame quality. I have a D7k now, which somehow I have never been thrilled with, and in fact, since getting a Fuji X-P1, which has noticably better IQ at all ISO levels, I rarely choose to use the D7k, unless I need flash or telephoto. My D7k also had the oil splatter issue, and I recently got it back from Nikon in LA, supposedly fixed. That remains to be seen, as I haven't used it enough yet to be able to verify.

In any case, I am now fully warned and have decided to not by a Nikon D600 at this time, or probably ever. What is left? The D800 has similar issues, with splatter and AF defects.

Which full frame Nikon body can I buy that has no known, serious, potentially deal breaking issues?

Too early to tell, but mine is not all that bad yet. But have not used it much yet. Some spots, but nothing I would return. Gonna keep an eye out.

Mine is from a very new batch, Calumet USA ser# 6069xxx. Still had to update to new firmware, was not already in camera.

Good grief, oil spots a known problem with the D600, so why would you buy a D600 and then be angry/surprised when the spots showed up on your camera???

Re: What is left?

Not a lot.... when it comes to Nikon.

I tried 2x D7100 and the first had left focus issue and the second one was blurring all photos except in LV.

Jump ship? Any other suggestions?
