Attn: Sigma announces new 18-35 f/1.8 zoom lens for APS-C
Apr 18, 2013

Holy Camoly! The first ever super-fast constant f/1.8 zoom lens for APS-C just got announced:

http://www.dpreview.com/news/2013/04/18/Sigma-announces-worlds-first-F1-8-constant-aperture-zoom-lens

The zoom range is extremely useful in my book for landscape and street photography and those who prefer carrying 800g instead of changing between 2 (smaller) primes, this might be a breakthrough. Actually, for the E-mount we do have the 35mm f/1.8 but to my knowledge there is no 18mm E-mount providing f/1.8. The Sigma 19mm f/2.8, and the two Sony SEL16f28 and SEL20f28 lenses are the closest as it gets but still a full stop slower than what this zoom lens is capable of at its wide end. Seeing it that way, this new Sigma lens might even surpass the speed/IQ of two prime lenses, which is nothing short of amazing.

Very interesting.

But 800 grams, 72mm filter size, 79mm diameter, 122mm length - ouch!

Larger than SEL18200..

Indeed, the tradeoffs are significant. But it's great to have the option in case someone might actually prefer to carry around this big chunk of glass instead of having to change 2-3 primes.

I think these huge dimensions somehow defeat the purpose of having a very slick and (almost) pocketable Nex system. But again, it's great to have the option and it's great to see the technological advances the lens industry is making.

Hopefully, someday they will find out how to shrink the size while keeping up IQ and speed.

What Sigma is doing here is creating some nice pressure to lens specialists like Zeiss as well as to the established big guys in the camera/lens industry (read: Canikon). If they manage to keep the price of this lens in a reasonable range, the competitors will have to put up their sleeves and get back to workbench creating better, faster new lenses.

That's how innovation is driving competition is driving even more innovation.

The Zeiss's 24mm is right in the middle of the Sigma's focal range, and not far from either end. Considering that the Sigma is significantly bigger, heavier and pricier, I'll stick with my Zeiss and zoom a little with my feet.

It's certainly an interesting engineering achievement.

But it seems to be an inferior alternative to the common 24-70 f/2.8 on FF.

I mean, if you were absolutely shackled to APS-C... then sure.  But that's a lot of bulk, weight, and money (probably) for about the same performance as the forementioned very-common FF setup... for a smaller FL range.

Price isn't known yet, but with specs like that and being the first of its kind I'm sure it's gonna be at least $1500.

It seems well suited for use with Sigma's SD1 DSLR. The combination will produce some very high quality images.

The price will no doubt be high.

Good point.  I totally forgot about Sigma's own unique homebrew, and how this would actually compliment it quite nicely.

Glad to see more and more coming out.  Sigma seems to really love the compact market.

http://petapixel.com/2013/04/17/leaked-photos-appear-to-show-a-beastly-sigma-18-35mm-f1-8-lens/

I will echo the thoughts already mentioned.

1- Big. Will it be worth it?  Certainly interesting.

2- Price. Sigma has continued to impress us with the cheapest AF lenses available.  Lets see what they do with this.

3- Similar.  There already is the E-Mount Zoom and 18-55mm.  As point 1 states, it is big, bigger than the current offerings.

Good news. This might be the ticket for some street shooters or low-light hunters out there but I'd personally much prefer a native HQ standard zoom for my N7, something between the Tamron 17-55mm/f2.8 (large) and the Fuji XF 18-55mm/f2.8-4 performance wise.

It's more than a stop faster than a 24-70 f/2.8.  You could argue that you'll get similar performance in low light with a Ff and a 24-70/2.8, but that'd be entirely down to the FF camera's better high ISO capabilities. The only real similarity would be in DoF control.

Anyway, this is a pretty cool achievement and I think pretty clearly NOT designed for the NEX system. Great choice for APS-C wedding shooters methinks!

Not very useful to me.

May be off-topic here, but I would like Sigma to make 50-150 f4.0 E-mount lens, I know they can make great lens in that range.

It would be perfect pair with 16-50

For NEX users anyway? Using it with MF only? I don't get it.

It's something I would also like, but I think a lens in that range being a straight thru f/4 would be much too large on my Nex-7. I got rid of my DSLR's and large lens to downsize, a lens like the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and a 50-150mm f/4, in my case defeats the mirrorless concept. Maybe Sigma can give us a high quality 50-150mm f/2.8-5.6 in a reasonable size to fit the E mount.

interesting sigma is ignoring sony. is sony abandoning alpha?
In reply to smallLebowski, Apr 18, 2013

sony is confusing the market.  they cancelled the a77 replacement and possibly other alpha cameras too .  sigma now is ignoring them.

from sar...

"The two FF-SLT that according to our information should have been announced within 2013 have been withdrawn.  he planed a77 successor (the A78) that should have been announced this summer has been take off the roadmap"

While I can appreciate Sigma being the first to break the mold with a fast zoom, the lens itself will be very limiting... not due to AF/MF, but due to 2x zoom, size, weight and very likely, cost.

At 810 lb, I would rather carry, Sigma 19/2.8 (140g) or Sony 20mm f/2.8 (69g) and Sony 35/1.8 OSS (155g). Fraction of the size, small fraction of the weight, and likely close to half the price tag.

For NEX, I would rather see someone develop 20-60 f/2.8-4.
