Spam Mail What do you do?

Do you report spam?

Do you use a service like spamcop?

What do you do if anything at all?

I sometimes find myself using spamcop just to see what happens, whether it will stop or increase.

Been using Mailwasher for quite a number of years.-  I reckon it's the best out there.

No. Too many other more productive things to do.

All of my mail goes to (or is forwarded to) Gmail. Their spam filtering takes care of most of it, even when I was getting a several thousand a day in aggregate.

I only get a fraction of the spam I once did years ago. I think the carriers are filtering some of it, and I use Windows Live Mail and right click on unwanted spam and choose "Junk Mail" and relegate it to "junk," "blocked sender," or blocked domain."

Seems to work pretty well. Most of the spam I get these days is obviously generated by my on-line shopping and research: Crucial, Lexar, NPPA, Amazon, etc.

I have many email accounts. They are all read in one Gmail account. The nice thing about Gmail is I can reply or send email as any one of those accounts.

Gmail's spam filter works remarkably well. I view the spam folder once a day to be sure I'm not missing anything but it's usually only a handful and usually nothing I need. Very few false positives. The more you use Gmail the better it gets with the filtering.

If you report spam, what method do you use and do you think it is effective?

I use Outlook Express's Message Rules, adding to the rules as spam is received.

The first rule is (a white list):
Apply this rule after the message arrives
Where the From line contains '@ebay.co.uk'
Stop processing more rules

The second rule is (select words that I consider will not be used by people I want to hear from):
Apply this rule after the message arrives
Where the Subject line contains 'viagra' or 'cialis' or 'drugs' or 'zinc' or 'antibiotics' or 'thyroid' or 'sleepiness' or 'symptoms' or 'respiratory' or 'cipro' or 'pathogens' or 'fungus' or 'infection' or 'clearitol' or 'acne' or 'lamisil' or 'saxual' or 'you,ll' or 'irritation' or 'via!' or 'stir' or 'irritation' or 'cia' or 'jelly' or 'sustain' or 'truth' or 'sax' or 'sleep' or 'pleasure' or 'game' or 'fought' or 'mood' or 'subject' or 'sesuality' or 'sensuality!' or 'crazy' or 'conpliments' or 'it,s' or 'smaller!' or 'exhausting' or 'hollywood' or 'diet' or 'night!' or 'struggle' or 'life!' or 'pills' or 'pills!' or 'emotions' or 'emotions!' or
Delete it from server

The third rule is (block certain addresses):
Apply this rule after the message arrives
Where the From line contains 'noreply@blizzard.com' or 'softshop5458371@gmail.com' or 'shundramsmith@aol.com' or 'AFerry.co.uk <mail@aferry.com>' or 'chartroom@lissamail.com' or 'do_not_reply@holidayextras.co.uk' or 'support@leadexpert.com'
Delete it from server

Works well for me.  The actual lists of items are much larger.

That's where Mailwasher is so superior.

What is that supposed to mean?

I select the rules, not some third party programme which is guaranteed to make mistakes. By the way, I tried several automatic spam filters including Mailwasher and found them thoroughly capable of deleting genuine emails and very poor at deleting spam. I have no problems at all with my home brewed setup.

Stopped using mailwasher as not always 100% reliable.

All I can add is I and several Pro colleagues have been using Mailwasher for many years - ever since it appeared - and have never had those problems, so seems your setup/configuration is the real problem.  For any help, they are excellent at helping resolve any issues such as you say you have had.  I would certainly never have used it if there were any problems as I need full accuracy and 100% reliability, as do my Pro colleagues for their own specialist businesses (one being one of the top 3 structural design engineers in the World).

So - you have not had problems, so anyone having problems must be doing something wrong.

Well! What an attitude!

Thanks for the vote of considence Carl.  I shall rush out and get a bigger hat now!  Don't forget the chaps "down under" are good at support queries so fire at them should you find any problems that seem difficult to resolve.
