Buying a camera bag online
Apr 17, 2013

I've been looking around for a nice bag/backpack/slingbag for my Nex 6 and perhaps 2-4 other lenses. The thing is that the local shops around here do not really stock models that I want, as compared to the many online shops and eBay that seem to have something good. But I'm not so sure about getting a bag online since the shipping costs may bit a bit high given how big some bags are.

Have you bought a camera bag/backpack online? Or at least..how likely would you consider buying online as compared to a brick-motar store?

I bought my Kata backpack online without problems. I did plenty of research first and was very pleased with the deal I got.

I did lots of research online. The website cambags.com is particularly useful. Search for and read other reviews of bags you're interested in and make your decision. then find the best price. I bought my Billingham 445 from Amazon (free shipping) but it all depends on the deal, returns policy etc.

Just bought my latest camera bag online and couldn't be happier. Its obviously more difficult as you have to make sure you've done enough research to know its going to fit your needs and more importantly fit your camera gear.

If its a popular bag, a good resource is actually Youtube - you'll be amazed how many walkthrough videos there are with people reviewing bags. Gives you a good idea of perspective and how big the bag is, as well as getting a good look inside at the storage and pockets, etc.

As an aside, the bag that I just bought is the 'Tenba - Messenger Camera Bag Medium'. Its an awesome inconspicuous shoulder bag thats big enough for my 5dm3 + 70-300L + 24-105L + Samyang 14mm + 40mm 1.8 + 430EXII flash. Extremely happy with it. Great product video / walkthrough on the company site below if at all interested:

The Tenba ones look pretty decent! Yeah cause I've saw some good deals from the lesser known suppliers so I'm trying to see whether I should even try scoring a deal from these instead of the more well-established brands.

Nothing to worry about

In a perfect world (and definitely if you're buying your first ever bag), you should go to a bricks and mortar shop with your camera gear and see how it all fits.

However, if you're looking to buy one of the more well known brands (Lowepro, Crumpler, Tamrac, Kata, Domke etc...) I don't think you'll go far wrong by buying online. There are plenty of reviews to give you a fairly good idea of what you'll be getting.

I bought a Billingham f2.8 online and I was very pleased with the experience. This was a brand completely unavailable in my area and quite frankly, if you've decided on that kind of specialist (for want of a better word) brand, nothing else is really comparable.

Definitely buy online. B&H has great services, free shipping and no sales tax. Same for Cameta and Adorama. Just bought a Domke FXb Rugged Wear Bag from B&H and the best bag I've ever owned, fits my mFT kit perfectly and looks great. But don't be afraid to buy online. By the way, B&H seems to have the best bag images of the large sites for comparisons. I have also purchased one of the smaller Tamarac Adventure Zoom Holsters that I use quite a bit. if you are looking for something inexpensive but very sturdy, Tamarac is a great brand and the Rally series is very nice. I love the Domke because it doesn't have that "ballistic" camera bag look.

I  am using Samsonite Camera bag for storage of my camera since a year back. Good quality. To get it online, go on Samsonite India Online store.

This is a good source for trying out a bag online.
