Since this has only one knob for the ball tension, if you tightened it and were still able to move it, No this is not normal.

I would not trust it. Look at the SBH 250, around $70 from b&h. I can't move mine, it has 2 knobs plus 1 for panning.

i'll consider that.  but my other option is the manfrotto 055cxpro4 with the 054-Q2 head.  what do you think of that option?  i read in an old article that you can move the ball on vanguard heads when they are locked, but not on manfrottos.  but like i said, its an old article.  i haven't played with the 054-q2 head though.   plus is i were to get the vanguard tripod, i'd get the BBH-200 head which i'm hoping is better than the SBH-30 and doesn't move when locked.

I can even move my SBH 50 head like you but my SBH 250 is solid. I use it on my 055XPROB

why is that?  is it cause the SBH-250 can hold heavier weight?

is it a problem if you can move it with your hand?  its not like a person would do that while the exposure is going on and assuming we're not using those really big lenses and I doubt there is wind strong enough to move it.

Yes, the SBH-30 is a light duty head.  I have, like others have mentioned, the SBH-250.  I enjoy it with the Vanguard aluminum tripod legs combination.

Vanguard has a 100% guarantee.  Included in the literature you received with you tripod head lists this guarantee. Vanguard will replace this head free of charge.  Call the number listed in the literature or on the box.  A rep from Vanguard will be more than happy to speak with  you and replace your head if necessary (no questions asked).

have you heard or read anything about the BBH-200?  does it move if you push it?

No.  The Vanguard BBH-200 head compared to the SBH-30 head would be like comparing a VW Beetle to a Lamborghini.
