******Challenge 164 Taken A-Back - Results ******
Apr 14, 2013

There were 45 valid entries to this challenge. Thanks to those who posted additional images which kept the thread near the top of the list.

Here are the top 10 'Honourable' mentions in no particular order, actually chronological order.

Taking In... by Deepak Kaw

Another strong composition from Deepak and a very good conversion to B&W.

Those silly grown ups by blue_cheese

I like the fact that this was taken at the child’s eye level. I would have liked to see more space on the left and some cropping to reduce the space on the right. The head on the right shoulder should have been cloned our.

Back to Back pixd90

This is a fun image. I can think of an alternative title but I done want to say what that is.

Bass Rock by jkjond

As expected this is an excellent photograph from John. Unfortunately it is not quite what I was looking for in this Challenge.

Looking for the sun by rosiesphoto

Shooting a sunset in Miami looks to be quite competitive. Th slightly titled horizon does not detract rrom this nice wide angle shot.

That One! by JoeNap2

A very interesting viewpoint has produced some pleasing diagonals.

I have been unable to embed this photograph.

Jardin des Tuileries by rhlpetris

This is another image with a strong diagonal. I think I might have preferred one of your the other images for this particular challenge.

A Royal Wave by LAHJ

Another fun image.

and another image I cannot embed.

Oregon Coast Sunset by k5mitch

The two figures in the foreground are integral to this image.

That’s perfect by manudev

The ‘back’ is not so evident but I really like the colours.

The top 3 follow in the next post.

Here are the top 3.

3 Proud of herself by VittoDigital

Great snapshot through the crowd picks this lady out. Perhaps a shame the handbag is partially obscured.

2 Into the Dark by greatscott94

I like the portrait orientation which gives some space for the girl to move into.

1 Sick by sukotin

I have selected this image because the title explains so simply what is happening here. I can imagine the scenario of the first snowfall of the winter and this lad is sick and is not allowed to go out.

So Challenge 165 is yours.

Nice finalists, and given your last three I think I know which one you'd prefer ... Thanks for the very interesting challenge, and for choice of a very original theme.

Congrats Sukotin, let's see what comes up next. This forum has many excellent photogs, it's nice to see challenges going well. And there are so many newcomers, hope they start participating and debating photography, more than just technical stuff.

I Beam thanks for hosting the challenge (and for placing my entry so well )

I agree on the "partially obscured bag", it was a beautiful leather bag and the nonchalance she was dragging its leather strap on the ground was an important part of the shot

Congrats to Sukotin for the winning pic and to all the participants.

Cheers

Nice one ibeam - I tend to avoid backs for the main part, so found this an excellent challenge. Lots of variety in the entries, and I enjoyed the humour in some.

Greatscott94 - my fave of the entries, but congrats to sukotin for the photo with a story - and the win.

Have to agree there, I thought that was a very provoking image...but overall a good challenge.

Looking forward to see what sukotin comes up with next

Congrats Sukotin and to I Beam for the flashback.
For me the most memorable "taken a-back" will always be
The Loneliest Job - George Tames, NY Times
Photo of JFK in the Oval Office

Thanks for that. I had not seen this before. The title matches the body language. Here is the link:

My favourite is still the shot by Henri Cartier-Bresson mentioned in my introduction to the challenge. Here is a link - see photograph number 7.

In reply to I Beam, Apr 15, 2013

Hello, here i am ...

and sorry for late answer.

First i want to thank I BEAM for placing my picture in first place among these great pictures.

That little boy is my son and he was at hospitals window back then. There were snowfall at nighttime and he couldn´t go out to play with it. There was so much more going on than just a cold or fewer, but everything is ok now. I thought that simple title is enough to provoke emotions which were behind that picture.

Secondly i have a problem and would want  your answers.

If i host next challenge it will be short, just 7 days.I´m leaving in Nothern Norway for fishing/photo trip in ten days, so i can´t host usual 14 day challenge.

I have theme in my mind, but what you think. Is 7 days too fast for challenge ?

I would want you to express you opinios fast because i´m running out of time.

If you think challenge should be longer, then  i have to deliver it to second place winner greatscott94.

So it´s up to you...i´m waiting for answers.

Agreed, after all, its supposed to be a challenge.

Besides, its always best when the winner hosts the next round. A short sharp round won't hurt anyone - and most entries will be library shots in any case.

nothing wrong with 7 days, although I do wish less of the challenges were library shots, not really much of a challenge if you can just choose from something you already shot.
