clogged epson 4900 print heads... "tubes at end of life" message...
Apr 5, 2013

fired up the 4900 yesterday - has been weeks since last use...

would not work at all...

gave message 4000 and said 'print tubes nearing end of life'...

how can this be?  unit was first used in october - inks were sealed...

I have it fixed...

My solution - turn printer on - as carriage starts to move to middle - pull the power plug from back of printer

get a piece of - not to fluffy - paper towell, i used coarse doubled up, soaked with windex - pull the print head over the towel - close the lid and wait for several hours

after 3 cycles of this... over 20 hours

and 1 general, clean and 1 'head' clean - back in business...

the fumes from the ammonia are the trick here to success...

I've seen this recommended over and over again. It's nice to see someone trying it for the first time with success.

Interesting.  What volume of printing do you produce?

One day long ago, a sorcerer and a warrior did battle, as such things were commonplace in that age. Sometimes the sorcerer won, and the sum value of human abilities was improved some trifling amount. Sometimes the warrior won, and again the human race improved by some insignificant amount, for a sorcerer who can't defeat one miserable warrior is a poor sorcerer indeed.

This seems to be a common problem with this printer.  As my printing needs are infrequent, guess this printer would not work for me.

I understand the the 3880 is a bit more forgiving - may be my next purchase.

all a person needs to do is run a print check weekly - or keep humidity at 50% ..  air in my house is dry ...

Or consider the Canon iPF5100, with all the "pro" features of the 4900 and more - vacuum transport, power roll-feed, totally lossless auto PK/Mk switching w/ 12 inks, and thermal heads that simply don't clog in the traditional sense, with total freedom from routine nozzle check prints and forced head cleanings.

The two heads have a huge nozzle redudantancy with auto-remapping of failed nozzles (generally electro-thermal burnout IMO). Eventually you will get a head error message, a defective nozzle pattern with no response to cleanings, but the $450 heads are easily user-replaceable.

Over six years, with two generations of this printer, never a problem after prolonged non-use during travels, and some 6000 sq ft printed, and one pair of heads replaced.

Glad I found this thread. We have a 4900 that also got the message "print tubes nearing end of life'. We have a total of 88 prints that have gone through it. And of course it is out of the 1 yr warranty. Epson told me that the head cleanings could have done it. Ouch!

The closest authorized center is 4 hours away, so since it was junk, we decided to try some stuff. After the first soaking with the windex solution, we have life coming to the two dead heads!! Will let you know if we totally revive it or not.

I know, we don't print a lot, yet. We couldn't get it calibrated the way we wanted, so we just ran alignment's every couple of weeks. We missed a couple and it was extremely dry. Lesson learned.

Thanks for the info.

I had to soak mine a total of 3 8 hour shifts over 2 days and 2  power clean 'nozel pairs'

I never had to do a full power clean....

it will be ok....

time is your friend here...

Got a very interesting newsletter from Jon Cone (inkjetmall) today on Epson R3000, 4900, 7900, 9900, 7890 and 9890 printers clogging - Epson OEM inks versus Epson 4900 print heads!

I don't have one of these (have a 2880) but it seems like a good read.

I was just about to post the same thing! LOL!

Looks like it is interesting that this problem has reached enough ears and EPSON still denies it ever existed!
