Which lens for Nikon D7100?
Apr 3, 2013

I'm planning on buying a Nikon D7100 and would like to know whether the AF-SDX 16-85mm f/3.5 - 5.6G ED VR is a good lens to start with. I'm a beginner and I'm looking for an all-round-lens which is suitable for all purpose photography and not too heavy. Could someone also let me know what the exact difference is with the 16-85mm f/4? Thank you !

I own the 16-85. It's a great lens.

But that doesn't necessarily mean its the right lens for you.

I bought it because I wanted something wider than the kit lens as my walkaround lens, because I enjoy landscapes and travel shots where a wider shot is needed.

The alternative would be the 18-105. If you do more portraits than landscapes, this might be the lens for you. It is half the price, lighter, smaller and has more range in the telephoto area. Its almost as sharp.

There are many threads about these two in the Nikon Lens forum, settle down with a coffee and have a nice read.

When I got my D90 I purchased the 16-85 f3.5-5.6 along with the kit 18-105. The plan of couse was to send the 16-85 back if it did not meet my needs. I kept the 16-85 and got rid of the 18-105 and have never looked back. Its been my walk about lens since then. Now use it on my D7100 and am very pleased with the results. Supposedly the 16-85 is available on e-bay at much reduced prices. I am not a e-bay kind of guy with camera equipment but some people absolutely swear by the quality of the equipment they come across.

Besides the obvious f4 cannot tell you any more about the newer 16-85!

16-85 is  a very good lens.

However, if you don't really know what lens you need, why not start with 18-55 kit lens? That one is cheap and offers good image quality too.

Good to know that the 16-85 mm works well on the D 7100 . Six35sigma, are you also happy with photo's taken indoors (restricted/poor light conditions) ?

The main difference between the 16-85 f/3.5-f/5.6 and the 16-85 f/4 is that the former lens exists and the latter does not. Did you mean the 16-35 f/4? That's an FX wide angle that would not be useful to you unless you had lots of spare cash and planned to buy an FX camera soon.

I use the 16-85 on a D300 and have found it to be excellent, especially because of its wide angle capability. The D7100, though, has lots more pixels than a D300 and may show some shortcomings in this lens. On the other hand, I don't know of any sharper zoom in the "normal" range except maybe the 17-55, which goes for $1500.

The 16-85 is by no means a fast lens, at the telephoto end it is f5.6, which limits what you can do in low light.  You can look at a faster zoom lens with a constant f2.8 aperture or look at a fast prime like the 50 f1.8 or 85mm f1.8.

The 16-85 f4 exists only on Nikon rumours, as there was a patent filed for such a lens some time back. It hasn't been released, we don't know the pricing or whether the image quality will be significantly better. The rumours on a release date seem to have stopped. I wouldn't wait for it myself.

What's your main type of photography? I'm an absolute newbie but bought my D7000 a year ago and skipped the kit lens for the 35 f1.8 (back then no particular surge for landscape photography) and then added the 70-300. The 70-300 has since then been changed but it was a versatile combination that worked for me.

Are you asking me or the original poster?

My main type is landscapes. If I had more money though, I'd buy an UWA, and then the 18-105 would be fine. If you want to travel light and go with two lenses, the 16-85 and the 70-300 covers a lot of range, and I have both.

Ah, sorry, the original poster Personally, I was a bit ambivalent and exchanged the 70-300 for the 18-300 to have a single lens for travelling.
