Trying something different (for me) with zuiko 24mm
Apr 3, 2013

I always find myself stopping down and trying to achieve sharpness throughout rather than embracing a shallow dof - a hangover from p&s maybe?

Anyway, tried experimenting with the Zuiko 24mm f/2.8. It is not a lens known for it's character although it has no problem with sharpness. Never tried it wide open, so thought I'd give it a go.

Tried shooting in black and white (contrast +2) and raw & jpeg so I could get some colour images if I wanted to do some PP.

Anyway, here's a few results:

incidental dog 2

incidental dog 3

All good, but #4 & #6 are beautiful! I love shallow DoF. Canon FDn 35/2 + old NEX-5:

Is a little unusual from you mate, nice to see a break away side coming through and nice work. Good variety and a good lens as well.

All the best Simon and well done.

Danny.

I like the three first pictures, the third is really nice.

I love that lens too. I don't know what makes you write it has no character, though. I find it has as much character as the Minolta 24mm f2.8 (although slightly different colours).

After your recommendation and sample shots, I researched the lens quite a bit through google searches and I got the impression that it was rather neutral in colour rendition. It is seems well-renowned for it's sharpness but not for character. These opinions are always subjective, so tried exploring the lens' capabilities to see for myself. Still seems pretty sharp at f/2.8, but does it have a distinctive character? Up to the viewer I suppose!

I don't have any experience of the Minolta 24mm so can't compare.

Glad you like a few of the shots

Thanks Alan - glad you like them.

Shallow dof is a bit outside my comfort zone so experimenting when time allows.

That is exactly its character... sharp for a 24mm at f2.8 with a relatively good contrast !

Ahhh - OK, in that case it's showing it's character quite well!

I'm impressed with it wide open - used to seeing a hazy mush with some other lenses
