Yeah, that strategy is getting a little old. It must be successful for them though, otherwise they wouldn't keep repeating it.

Re: Finally new releases from Pentax...

Just what we were all waiting for........  OTOH somebody must be waiting for them because they keep adopting this strategy.  Personally, I'd never make my 'to buy or not to buy' decision on the basis of color.

I wonder how much it costs to do the design and marketing work and to change all the injection molding gear over to color batch runs......  Just speaking personally, I might watch and wait for deeper changes.

Cheers, Rod

They missed Mary Kay Pink, and IBM Blue. Darn.

Not exactly for the mindset & tastes of this Pentax forum

Pentax is really successful in demystifying 'serious' photography business for consumers and they do it better than anybody else. By making cameras available in colours is part of that long term strategy.

I think Nikon is trying to go that direction too to some degree, or at least there is a desire, but they carry on an aura or 'seriousness', which is hard to get rid of.

Shows how important the mindset and tastes of these forums are to the decision-makers at Pentax.

Re: Finally new releases from Pentax...

I would see it as a ploy to keep the sales and marketing guys happy while they wait impatiently for substantial new products. The rep has to have something to talk about when he goes into the shop ...  It's getting a bit tired as a tactic though, and might undermine the brand for those who see the blackness of their camera (preferably scuffed a bit) as a mark of masculine seriousness.

Camo colours might have been useful for some wildlife shooters.

I want a white one (was available already in white) out of practicality. I live in an extremely hot and sunny part of the world.

But yes when you are eagerly awaiting the next move from Pentax and see this sort of thing it winds you up!

I have the impression it goes down well in the Japanese market.

Well it went down a storm for the kx, selling well for the q10 so guess far from pathetic is a sound marketing strategy.

Those more interested in their image than that of the camera are already totting cannon 5d's or better with canon/nikon emblazoned in big letters on their straps so not really much market in the wanna be camp.

Pro's are also already equipped and shooting the cameras they need for their profession so again not much market there either

20 somethings though who want to be different and have fun with their hobby they haven’t had a voice until Pentax decided straight laced dour faced fuddy duddies wasn't the image they wished to portrait their brand as.

I think Pentax marketing and fresh approach is fun and amusing.

Why does it have to be black

Why does it have to be black? Color is more fun.

The color won't affect what is inside, so it's just as serious a camera as the black version. Neither will it cost a fortune for R&D, and if marketing says it will make Pentax more money (and they have experience with this) they so be it!

The olive green one is close enough to camo.

Shouldn't there be a pink one? (Doh, i mean for someone I know, not for me of course!)

Re: Why does it have to be black

Why does everyone get their panties in such a wad here anytime Pentax releases anything that is not directly related to FF? Get used to being miserable.

And btw, cameras don't have to be black and serious to be real cameras. You'd think by 2013 people could move beyond one color.

If Pentax can bolster sales by offering some color, I say good for them!  It doesn't take a design engineer to add pigment, so it isn't hurting development resources at all.  We'll still get our K-3, and that FF body, but I'm thinkin' not in pink.

I guess this is new for the rest of the world. In Japan and some parts here is Asia, those colors were already available on day 1 (the matte orange is just a boss) and is quite successful in it's home country.

But when Pentax decides to release the limited editions, that is actually news but its almost always exclusive in Japan (Pentax Q Evangelion, Pentax K-r Gundam, etc etc).

I love colored cameras. I really hope that Pentax will release the K-3 in 100 colors like the Q-10. Particularly the silver with brown leather or the olive green with brown leather...yummmmy

Because they are playing time, and I'm tired of these marketing games! Please give us something that we want, not just the same cameras with little modifications.
