A tour de force with the HS50 Joms, a most enjoyable and impressive set. You nail the wonderful texture of bird feathers, the colour tone is excellent, the compositions spot on, even the bokeh is gorgeous - far out mate you really know your stuff.

Just order from Amazon and do an extensive testing. If you are not happy return it back. Testing one camera in a store is not enough to judge if it is a keeper or not.

Hey Max, where have you been lately mate? Thanks for your comment and I'd like to see your unorthodox style of shooting again.

Cheers,

Nice one Joms.  Up until the last week or so I hadn't seen any need to upgrade from the 30. First of all Kim with that Merlin shot, and now you - great bird shots with much more detail than the 30. Time to save the pennies and wait for the next good deal to come along methinks.  The close up of the Mockingbird is my fave.

Regards

Ian

Hi Ian,

I thought you went to DSLR route already and abandoned the superzoom camera? Yes HS50 will deliver better picture because of the added reach, speed and slightly improved IQ. I appreciate your comment my friend.

Cheers,

-=[ Joms ]=-

Not totally.  The Sony A37 is superb up to ISO 1600 and is really quick with the 18-250 lens..

I had the Canon 55-250mm IS II before and it really is a superb lens a fraction of a cost. Best-bang-for-buck zoom lens of Canon IMHO. But time has come for me to sell it because I needed more reach.

This has been great for the winter birding I do.  As most know, as soon as the light is less than good, the superzoom struggles for detail and speed and this was frustrating me. But there is no way I am going to spend the big money on the big and heavy lenses for my Sony, so the reach of the superzoom is still great. The extra reach of the HS50 is really tempting now its being matched with better quality from you, Kim and the others.

Yes it made me come to birds a lot closer than before.

Better light here now and the freezing cold winds have dropped so hopefully I'll get some good fuji shots to post soon.

Just patience my friend. I know you will get fabulous shots again.

Cheers

Ian

These are great shots. Looks like the HS50 works very well for birding with good detail. Did you have any issues with focussing at long-distances?

Hi Raj,

I appreciate your comment.

Yes sometimes there is focusing issue on distant subject at full-zoom but still faster and accurate than HS30 based on my experience.

Brilliant shot as always Joms! I particularly like the Starling, the colors and the detail is very good. Keep 'em coming.

well Joms,

you are now showing us images that are quite a bit better than your previous efforts with the hs30!!!

Honestly WJ, it made my birding a lot easier and quicker than before especially that I shoot birds outside a backyard. What more if I am a backyard birder?

congratulations and keep up the good work.

Thanks. I appreciate your comment.

I'm very sorry to say but these samples show that using RAW and the PP that comes with it is killing the HS50. This camera can do so much better.

I am afraid it has been lost to the rains Joms, BUT we needed the rain so bad it was very very dry and the ground parched...so the rains and clouds are welcome, my pond is now full and fish are happy...

Thanks for posting these. You did an exceptional job, as did the camera. I picked my three favorites [posted below]. That starling is a killer shot. The sparrows, that one's a happy shot. And I like the pose of the mockingbird.

Exceptional feather details on the starling, pretty colors and that blurred BG is beautiful.

This may look underexpose in your screen so crank up the brightness a bit.

I appreciate your generous comment Frank. The starling is a very beautiful bird albeit considered pest by some especially if they come in hordes. Sparrow has been my favorite bird to photograph  ever since because it is vastly common in any spot and in any weather. HS50 did excellent job here considering majority of my subjects are in shade so we can still see more improvements as the weather improves further.

Cheers,

The starlings in my area generally stick to the larger surrounding cities where I live although we've had a couple show here, too.

We have quite a number of brown headed cowbirds. Funny thing is that they lay their eggs in other bird's nests [during nesting time]. I read in Wiki that they'll destroy a nest if the other bird attempts to remove their egg. Brutal. Then when the mama delivers lunch, they'll horde the food from the other chicks. Even more brutal. And at times, they will push the other chicks from the nest. Perhaps the most brutal.  I guess they are a lot like humans. lol

I'll look forward to seeing more of your experience with your new camera, whether it involves birds or other subjects.
