The A57 is far superior, If you are a beginner or someone who is used to shoot with a P&S then it is definitely for you, if not you might have problems with the electronic view finder and prefer an optical one instead.

Entry level vs middle level DSLR...
In reply to Simao, Apr 2, 2013

While the A57 is bound to be better it's also more expensive; choose the lenses first, the camera second...

You cannot compare these camera's, the 1100d is entry level and better compared with the A37.

It's pretty obvious you did not bother to do research...

But, needless to say, the A57 is superior in every way. Fast AF in live view, high ISO, dynamic range, FPS, and about 100 more features...

From what I've read and from the few times I've used lower end Canons I think that at the entry to intermediate level Sony offers a better camera. It's in the semi pro and pro lines that Canon shines.

I don't think Sony is behind Canon in the semi pro line, unless you also add the lens lineup. In the top end pro line there is only Canon and Nikon. No Sony, not yet. Sure Sony is marketing the A99 as a pro camera in many countries, but this is not a very pricy top end pro model.
