No personal experience with this particular combo, but I suspect is awesome. It's a Zeiss 135mm f2 mounted on a Nikon D800E, afterall. Enjoy it!

3 more images - colors
In reply to orchidblooms, Apr 2, 2013

harsh middle of day light  - no adjustments other than WB

same variety of plant - late day light - only WB

adjusted curves for contrast and WB

ALL OF THESE IMAGES LOOKED HORRID IN THE LIVE VIEW SCREEN - had to rely on histogram...

the d800e screen is next to worthless

** Be Sure Tu View At 1 to 1 to be able to get an appreciation for what this lens can do on the crops - they are 100%

Thanks orchidblooms !

Great shots, great lens, and true to your moniker -- magnificent blooms !

How would you compare the new 135 to your 100 Makro: Performance (specifically and predominantly), but also to a lesser extent handling, focusability (new word) etc.

If you could only have one of them, (the position I am in at the moment, for use w/D800E) which would you choose ? If macro capability were not an issue, would your choice be the same ?

I have used the 100 and am enamored of its capability and "magic", but have been waiting for the 135 before pulling any trigger.

Of course, I realize that they are both stellar lenses, and being a lifelong Zeiss owner, my expectations of the new 135 are very high, as is my own hands-on opinion of the 100.

Thanks again.

still running this thru the paces

yesterday i was using this with the pn-11 tube...

all in all - this is easier to focus - is brighter - colors are amazing

unless you are doing repro work or architecture - hands down order the new 135 as soon as you can - i am rendering lovely images with this that do not need much fiddling with in pp

i am still noticing that 'bright' relative to dark areas in live view are just sort of blobs in the screen...  seems worse with this lens -when viewed on  monitor there are no hot spots...

shooting thru the DK-17 - seems easier as well - long focus throw ... helps

i think this may be best lens on the planet for your d800's

In reply to orchidblooms, Apr 4, 2013

Generally Tough Colors...

pale lavender roses...

Easy as pie...

Used new white balance card for first time - great results...

rendered nice soft colors...

No Sharpening Sliders...

adjusted WB  exposure and some clarity added in layer on single rose in crop

* be sure to view crop image at 100%

Pity Zeiss does not decide to offer a 200mm or a 300mm
In reply to Dan_168, Apr 5, 2013

I wrote to them several occasions, apparently, out of the question!

Only the very expensive zoom, I'd love to have, if I could...

As much as I like Zeiss, I don't think they could compete with Nikon and Canon in the supertele segment. There's a lot of experience and know-how involved in building these very large lenses, image stabilization and super-fast AF included. Nikon and Canon superteles have reached a very high standard both optically and regarding IS and AF with the 200/f2 and the 300/f2.8 lenses probably being the best of them all.

Again, I know what I am talking about... Having used several 200mm versions from Nikon, both Primes and zooms, I now settled for the Gem of the teles, the Voigtlander SL APO 180mm f/4.

The most amazing lens I've ever set my eyes on! Even doing Macro with Extension Tubes...

Fantastic, so I'd love to see what a Zeiss would do!

I know the zoom is amazing, but the price.... Impossible!!!!

Huge thanks to Zeiss USA

The Zeiss 135mm f/2 APO Sonnar in my hands today - makes up for the 10 month wait for the 15 zf.2

I will be shooting with this lens all weekend / d800e starting this evening -

Lots of glass in this lens - it is beautiful and i can see immediatly it will be much easier than the zeiss 100 makro-planer to focus... much longer throw...

are there any considerations - type of shots folks would like to see this run thru?

i will do my best to run this beauty thru the paces

i can see this lens will be 'bright' and will really bring my images to light!

Hi!

Just returned from an out of town trip and the Zeiss 135 was waiting at home for me!.

Not much light at midnight , but a few quick indoor tests in artificial light against the Zeiss 100/2,suggests I'm going to like the 135/2

Unfortunately have to work tomorrow, but looking forward to sharing samples soon. Probably won't have time to shoot much until the weekend....

I was a little miffed that the 135/2 was delivered a few days after I had left for New Orleans, so I had to 'suffer' with my 100/2:

Nikon D4 ,Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 2/100 ZF
1/800s f/2.0 at 100.0mm iso400

CROP:

Best regards,

RB
