Buy the 9-18mm or 11-22mm Wide Angle Lens?
Mar 29, 2013

Hi,

I would like to add a wide angle lens to my collection and am not sure if I should go with the 9-18mm f4.0-5.6 or 11-22mm f2.8-3.5.  The 11-22 is faster (and a bit more expensive) but I'm more concerned about the different focal ranges.  How much wide angle is lost between 9 and 11?  If anyone knows of a site which compares the two with pictures, I would appreciate a link.

Thanks!

There's a photo with all the ZD framelines from 7-300mm; hopefully somebody with a better memory than I can link to it.

The answer is the difference between 9 and 11mm is a big one, so if your main goal is going widest, then the 9-18 is the way to go.

I have the 11-22 and the 7-14, so can't comment on the 9-18, only to note it's not weatherproof. The 11-22 can be used wide open with confidence, and is very well corrected.

Of course, what you really want is the 7-14.

Cheers,

Rick

http://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/41870468 Four or five years ago, I was agonizing over the same decision.  I ended up with the 9-18.  The 11-22 may be a "better" lens, but the 9-18 is also very good, and 9mm opens up a whole new world if you've never done UWA before.  Julie

Agree that the 11-22 is a better lens, but the difference between 9 and 11 is more than you might think.  If you want 'ultra wide', then get the 9-18 or 7-14.  The 11-22 used to be my favorite lens until I got the 12-60mm, which made the 11-22 redundant.

I have the 9-18 and have been consistently impressed with the quality of the images.  I use it mainly for landscape images, but also used it during walking tours in San Francisco a few years ago.  I was very pleased with the images.

My "kit" is the 9-18, 14-54 mk2 and 70-300.  I dismissed the 11-22 when I was deciding because I wanted the wider angle and the upper end of the 11-22 overlapped the 14-54 too much.

I don't have the 11-22 but do have the 9-18, have used it on my original 510, and my current E30 and on my OMD. It performs very well on all 3, and appears to suffer only the limitations of the camera and/or photographer. Very lightweight and easy to maneuver.

I've had the 9-18 for a few years, attached to my E-30.  I use it a lot for street photography and have been very happy with it.  It's not a WOW lens like my 50-200, but very serviceable and reasonably priced.  If I were you, I'd look for a used copy at this point.  You won't be let down.

2 mm is nothing at the long end but make very significant difference at the short one. You want that amazing effect of an image drawing a viewer in, go 9-18. If you have 12-60, combo is near perfect (unless you go with 7-14 which makes it absolutely perfect but... )

This comparison has been discussed many, many times for many, many years. Here on DPR and elsewhere. If you googe that question you would have seen. I thought..let me help you and googled it for YOU and here is the link. You will see it contains many posts from this FORUM as well as other forums and sites. Please avail yourself of it and lots of success

Looks like you will have to copy and paste as the link wont display live here. Or just google Olympus 11-22mm vs Olympus 9-18mm.

Hi,

As mentioned in some of the answers, yes I really do want the 7-14, but it is out of my budget. 😓

Since I mainly take photos in sunlight, looks like the 9-18 is the way for me to go... at least until I can afford the 7-14 😊

Thanks!!

I have all three of those lenses, and yes the 7-14 is the killer on those wide angle shots.  All do quite nicely, however.

Hi Shelli,

Here's one I took with the 11-22mm and the Olympus E-1

Hi, I pulled out my E5 only yesterday with the 9-18mm and got some great shots, for the price you just can't go wrong, this lens is a real bargain that won't break the bank

I faced the same choice last year and went with the 11-22mm and I have found it plenty wide.  The greatest limitation is me.

You just can't go wrong here.  Either lens is fine.

I also concur. After reading the DPreview of the 9-18, I couldn't see a reason not  to spend less money, get more at the wide angle end and still have a lens that DPreview felt was excellent. ( now if I had hit the lottery probably would have gone with the 7-14)

I have the 11-22 and am very happy with what I've shot with it. At the time used 11-22's were going for less than new 9-18's so that was my deciding factor. Looking for a wider lens than the 11-54 so both would fit the bill for that.  Presently doing most of my wide angle shooting with a Canon 10-20 and it's working very well. Slightly more FOV than the 11-22 but it's not a great deal.

Good Luck.
