Wow, these look all incredibly good. A few are instant classics. What lens is this exactly, could you link to an amazon page?

S3ZAi,

These were taken with a SAL500F80.  It is a discontinued (2010) Sony lens that was produced from a Minolta version of the same specs.  The are numerous Minolta versions around on ebay . .  Sony versions are more scarce.

It is a f8.0 fixed aperture lens with AF on any Sony body (need a LA-EA2 adapter for any Nex body).  For anyone wanting the reach and light/small it is a great option.

Thanks for looking and the nice comments.

Huge smiles this end mate :-)

Fantastic Jack !! Wonderful shots of wonderful Egrets. Wish we had them in Wellington here. Amazing to see and what wing spans. Great captures and timing.

All the best Jack, camera, lens and you are all working together just fine mate

uhligfd,

All were shot with auto ISO.  The EXIF is on each shot.

Thanks Danny,

We had a great time with these guys . . . beautiful birds.

And we had as much fun with a whole pile of herons which I am still sorting thru . . . another post coming at some point and those herons are amazing birds as well.  It is truly inspiring just to be around these kind of creatures . . . as you well know, we are all fortunate to have the tools and opportunity to capture their beauty.

Excellent series Jack.I've always dismissed the 500mm reflex because of the infamous "doughnut bokeh",but your images have definitely changed my mind.Even though a few of your images have foliage in the background,I can only see a hint of the doughnut bokeh. And that's only in one of images.

Great job! Thanks for sharing your pics.

Robert,

The donut issue happens so infrequently that we never worry about.  It has showed up in maybe 1-5% of the shots.  We still have a way to go on technique with this lens, but it gives that 750mm of reach in a light/small package that can be handheld . . . . the trade offs sure seem like a good deal to us.

Thanks very much for looking and the kind comments.

Nice to see you "dust" the Reflex Off Jack , Sure handles well doesn't it .

Nice Shots , I have a feeling E bay might be getting some action in the immediate future.

I have found the Minolta/Sony generates Substantially less Do nut Bokeh

than others such as the Tamron SP 500 .

With your Permission Jack I would like to post up an Example with a Foliage Background

with the S/M Reflex.

the 500 mm Af reflex works better on an alpha camera....

the 500 mm Af reflex works better on an alpha camera....

since it also allows you to use image stabilisation not just AF.......

I´m collecting that lens and I got a few of them ! ; )(Minolta versions)

Its a very very fine lens and you have a very nice set of pictures there !

Re: Egrets with the 500mm Reflex. . .

I put these up a while back but wanted to show how "regular" this Reflex can Be background wise

For it's size you cant beat it.

How about manual focusing units like...

Re: How about manual focusing units like...

...Nikons, etc? Is auto focusing, available only with the Sony reflex and adaptor, the only way to go or is manual focusing possible?

Carlgo,

For us the ability to AF is critical.  But folks like Danny Young (nzmacro) do nothing but MF when shooting BIF. . . . . and produce superb results.

Everyone is different. Thanks for looking.

Jack: excellent results, but...

...how much crop? I was trying to deduce your approx. shooting distance to those egrets but failed no finding a full frame (resized of course, as DPR doesn't take 4000x6000 px)

best,

jpr2
