Renting 70-400 g2 vs 70-400 SSM for A55
Mar 24, 2013

I will be going to Yellowstone and the Tetons for 10 days and will be renting a lens in June. I have rented before on a few trips like this…and I have a question…on which lens you would recommend.

I also have a Sony class on Tuesday and will ask the Sony Rep what they recommend renting..but wanted to get the DPreview buddies opinion too. Should I try to find the Sony 70-400 G2….to rent? This is my third time renting a lens like this and I know I have another trip to Africa..so at some point I will decide about buying..but right now…still seems renting is the most economical. Sony 70-400 mm F/4-5.6 G2 $299.00 - this one is out right now and I may not be able to get it back, but trying to figure out why this one is so much more with the Fstops being the same.  Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 SSM - $148.00 So it seems between these two: (lensrentals.com doe not carry the G2) SIgma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 - $161.00 (before when i asked on this one..there was feedback that it was not a sharp..so probably will NOT go with this one - based on ya'lls help 2 years ago). Borrowlenses.com has the following and 2 week rental price:
I have the Sony A55. Thanks everyone...Stacey

Hey Stacey,

The 70400G2 is not scheduled for availability in the USA until July (I've got one pre-ordered), so I suspect the reason it is "out" is because they just don't have one yet, but you can't go wrong with the silver one. I plan to be in Yellowstone late Mayearly June too, so maybe will bump into you!

...yep, just checked the website you mentioned , they show expected availability of the G2 in August.

Hey Alan..just saw this!

Thanks..I talked to a Sony guy and he told me the same thing.

That would be cool to run into you.  If you see a party of 9 people in a big 15 passenger van and I have my sony a55 with the SILVER lens say hi.

You may want to check if the 55 can take advantage of the faster chip and motor of the g2.  I remember the 900 had to be upgraded via FW to handle the 500 (same chip and motor supposedly).  Don't feed the bears or slather your kids with honey unless they are being bad.

I have the 70-400 v1 for Tetons and Yellowstone, and it the 400mm reach was really useful for wildlife. The zoom range also gave me flexibility for landscape shots.

The long reach also helps in maintaining distance to these bears.....these below eventually crossed right in front of my car!

Glad I stumbled on to this thread. I'm mainly a m43 shooter now, but still love my a57 and Sigma 300mm for Teton/Yellowstone.

We take two trips a year to Teton/Yellowstone and actually have come to prefer Teton for the in close photo and wildlife opportunities.

Just wanted to say that this is one of the best bear shots I have ever seen,...period.

Here is a shot of the face of El Capitan in Yosemite, hand held with the 70-400 G1 on the A900, and they were a little over 2/3 of the way up the face.

Rest assured the 'silver' is a good lens.

I'd go for the earlier version as its cheaper & optically very good. You may want to try out the new version but unless you try them side by side you still won't be able to decide between them ?

The new version is good but its main value is that it is more compatible with the latest focus systems on the A99.

I don't know why I am not getting emails that there has been posts!

but man, I just came back to this to ask a question and LOVE those pics.  can't believe that bear shot.

So I just went back to the borrow lens page as I read a facebook post of someone that is at YS now..ands he has a 500 with 1.4 on it.  (I am guessing she means the teleconverter).

You guys will like this I think

(let me know if you can't see it)

So when I went back to the borrow lens page..I noticed they also have the Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM  --- do you guys know anything about this vs the 70-400mm.

They also have a teleconverter for only 37.00.  What do you guys think about this guy?

I have heard it makes the pictures not as clear...but won't that get me to 600mm for those really far away shots.

Hi guys...I am back and headed to Alaska and I was going to rent the G2 lens..but the place I normally rent from does not carry it.

just curious if anyone (Paul??) has used it and think it is worth that much more on the A55 then the regular 70-400 lens.

If it is better, then I will look at other places to rent...

I am trying to see if there is any firmware update for the A55...

Thanks for any suggestions.
