Raw file are downloadable. Across the ISO range, the D7000 seems to be doing better, what do you think?

It is not a carefully controlled test. If you take raw data readings from the same spot you will notice differences even if the exposure settings are the same. Maybe D7000 produce different signal than D7100 for the same settings but there are differences between D7100 and D5200 too. One reason might be that they used 3 different lenses for the test. Another one might be that the light was not the same between shots. Anyway if you equalize the shots in the raw converter you will see that there is no any significant difference between them noisewise in the high ISO settings.

Apparently, it's a fair test. Same 50mm 1.8f, 200 lux environment, M mode, f5.6, 1/4s for the three cameras.

EDIT: according to the ACDsee exif, D7100 was used with 50mm 1.8F; D5200 with 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6; D7000 with 24 mm f/1.4.

Even if the three lenses were set at the same aperture doesn't mean that they let exactly the same amount of light pass.

Actually I see the D7100 is doing better than the D7000, although it also seems exposed more. If you look at the colour bands and the oriental note, the picture is conspicuously brighter, the colours are more vivid and the grain is tighter on the D7100. Perhaps not worth twice the price, but a tiny bit better.

I think it's virtually impossible to tell anything about noise from these, because the objects in the pictures are not the same size, which means I think, that the grain in the picture that is bigger will also look bigger than it really is. There must be a better way to judge noise than what I've seen everywhere so far.

I think the side by sides that you can do over on Imaging Resource are a far better way to compare than these examples.  Imaging Resource is a respected reviewer and although nothing is ever going to be 100% accurate they are the best we have at this point.
