just came back from a 2 week trip through South East Asia
Mar 20, 2013

Hi,

I brought my X Pro-1 plus the three primes: 14, 18 and 35mm. I took more than 80% of the images with the 14mm. What a lens! This lens is the real reason to get a X Pro-1 or X-E1 over a X100S.

I plan to post a short review of the lens soon but here are 2 I took with the 35mm: Hope you like them!

I have the XE1 and the 35mm and think that is a perfect match. Have been thinking about something wider, do you think the 14mm is as good a match? Am looking forward to your review.

The second photo is a great take on the standard "aircraft on a jetty at airport taken from departure lounge" picture,  v good.

Thank you but the images are taken with the 35mm. Here is one with the 14mm:

Hi,

I like the 35mm because of it's IQ but for me it is too tight most of the time. The 14mm is a great lens. Zero distortion and great sharpness. And it's best trick is the manual mode.

With the 35mm I use manual focus the whole time as in most cases using the AF-L button gets focus bang on with little manual adjustment needed, works like back button AF on my 5diii which I like. How does the 14mm manual focus compare with this? Also do you miss the 1.4 or is 2.8 ok for you on the wider lens?

A two-week trip to cultural Asia and you are posting one of two teaser pics of the airplane at the airport through a window? Where's the meat and potatoes!

With the 14mm you can use zone focusing. This is much better than messing around with AF or manual focus. In good light you simple set aperture at f8 or f9 and infinity ( focus scale ) to f8 or f9 and everything will be in focus.

f2.8 is not a problem. I try to use f8 if possible but I also took some images at f2.8. Limited DOF images is something you can't do with an 14mm lens anyway.

You are right but this has something to do with my blog. I only can post what is already on my blog and I started at the end of the trip.

You could always post some picures here on dpreview ... I have been travelling South East Asis extensively in the 70s, 80s and 90s so would be interested as to where you went and some sample pics.

here is a picture I took from our front lawn 2 days ago, 10:00pm and a balmy 25 degrees outside ...

I think exif should be ok? Picture reduced to 1800px, must say with those wide angle shots, the bigger, the merrier ...

Cheers

Hi Joachim,

I really like the Fuji colors and cool style of the bodys! Have you ever shot with the Xpro in the studio, and if, how is it speedwise? I´m really hard thinking about the XE-1 and your experience would be very helpful!

Hi Manfred,

I never shot my Fuji's in a studio but I think it should be possible. AF is not a problem as there is enough light but how to trigger the flashes?

Great photos and excellent IQ.  If I wanted to be Mr. Picky then I'm not keen on the 7 sided heptagon shaped bokeh.

If you have the X-Pro 1, it has a PC port.  You can hard wire.

If you want to hard wire, the hot-shoe to PC adpater is cheap all over the net.

I use the Paul Buff radio triggers, and they work fine on the X-Pro  1

Thank you. I realized that too. Still the Fuji lenses have a nice Bokeh for their short focal lengths.

Looking forward to seeing some photos from your trip. The shots inside the taxi remind me of when I was heading into KL from the airport and wanting to see the Petronas Towers. I had a week in KL and loved it. It would be better to go with a lighter camera like you did as I was using a Canon 1Ds 2 which is like a brick but I managed to get some shots I liked. I did a few older posts on my Blog. Will be checking back on your Blog for more photos:)
