A friend of mine has had this combo for years (so they're the older non-dg versions) and it works fine together.  He's satisfied with the optics and he even gets AF using Nikon's F mount.  The Sigma TC wouldn't AF although (again with Nikon) I think some shooters use other TCs and tape off a contact to get AF.  Can't speak at all for the more recent versions or Canon though.  Sorry.

I am not but it seems clear that you have several choices:

1) Tape the pins. The 5D3 will focus at f/8 without any issue if it does not know that is the aperture. I have absolutely no problem focusing with my Canon 100-400 and my Kenko non-reporting 1.4 TC since the TC does not report the reduction in aperture. The camera, thinking it is focusing at 4.5 (or 5.6) just focuses - quickly and accurately. Taping the pins will solve this problem.

2) Use a non-reporting TC. As above, if the camera does not know, it will focus. The 5D3 has a marvelous focusing system.

3) Wait for Canon's firmware update which, I believe, is supposed to be released next month. It will remove the software block that prevents focusing at f/8. Then you should be able to focus with your reporting TC.

thanks Mike!

in fact with kenko1.4+100/400 my 5dmkIII works perfectly.

i also tried the kenko2x and in good light conditions it works too(not fastly and the file quality isnt so good).

i just bought a new sigma500 f4.5dg the latest version.it should be better than 100/400

but i will know it just next week when i will receive it.

i will post the definitive answer.

regarding the new fw it could allow to use also canon tc till f8.

sigma500 is f4.5 and 6.3 with tc1.4x

i cross the fingers

thanks again

That is a really expensive lens and I am curious as to how well it works with the 5D3. If it is not too much trouble perhaps you could post your results and, if possible, some photos.

I can not afford the lens but perhaps I can enjoy the lens by looking at some of your images -:)

hi Mike,

my sigma 500f4.5dg will arrive next tuesday. of course i will post here the real answer to my question.

later i will post some shots too.price matter.....i want a 500mm+1,4x because for birding on ff 700mm

are what we need.

i paid it 4000 euros, italian prices are high as we have many taxes like vat 22%.3 years warranty.

canon 500 f4I cost second held 5000 euros,no warranty,used.

canon 500f4II new 9000 euros

very old canon 500f4.5 no more assistance 2200/2800 euros

so what i paid is the cheapest high quality 500 i could find.

i read many good reviews about this big sigma...i hope its true

have a good easter

Finally the lens is arrived.
Sigma500 is a very good lens with an high resolution a not so heavy.
On my 5dmk3 af works very fastly also with kenko1, 4x.
It works well with kenko2x too.
Iq remain very good.
Unfortunatly canon tc 1, 4III doesnt allow af.
Maybe with next firmware.
I tested all the tc also on 1d mk3 with same result.
I can raccomand this big sigma eg version

I would love to see some images.

And I would like to  know if your Canon 1.4 and 2.0 TCs work with the 5D3 and the Sigma 500 after you have the firmware update.

Thanks for posting about this.

I too am glad to hear the lens and lens/ kenko combos are working well so far.  Very nice glass!  I wish you much enjoyment and success and look forward to seeing some images.

My friend uses the lens on Nikon aps-c (dx) format (24mp) and he's still very satisfied with the lens at that resolution/ pixel density (just as he was when using FF with film).

All the best!

hi guys!! i'm sorry but i had a busy period and here in italy we forgot sunny days!!

since last october seems to be in scotland, rain and cloudy skyes everyday.

now i posted some dynamic shots ,some of them are cropped and pls consider i made it in bad light conditions and i shot in raw adding just some sharpness with canon dpp.

i prefer to show you dynamic targets as they are much more critical for camera/lens.

anyway i repeat AF is really good, all the shots are made with:

canon 5dmk3+sigma500f4.5eg+kenko dgx pro 1.4x NO TRIPOD just hands

i hope to have soon something better!!

have a nice week end

Considering the light, hand held and with TC, super!  Looks like you are getting pretty comfortable with the lens!

thanks Earthbound!! of course in good light condition will be easy to do better but first step is a good step.consider also that as example the owl is a big big crop, was very far away. i hope to have good light conditions next week see you soon....

Thank you for the posts.

Perhaps I am mistaken but it loooks like some of them (particularly the owl) took a fair amount of sharpening. What software did you use?

I agree that most of the shots look a little oversharpened, but considdering the conditions & his unfamiliarity with such a long lens & tc, they are very encouraging results for him. I am sure he will post better when conditions improve & he gets more used to the set-up.

Yes. I did not mean to sound overly critical.

He is using a 500mm with a 1.4 TC and the shots were taken hand held. Considering all of that I thought they were very good. I would not attempt such shots without a tripod. My hands are not nearly steady enough.

I had always attributed that quote to Chuck Yaeger but, upon checking Google, I found it was E Hamilton Lee. Live and learn ...

thanks guys,

as i wrote i just used canon software to edit the raw.it is canon dpp and in fact i added just sharpness.

the file produced from 5dmk3 are a bit soft with all the lens i have with 0 settings in camera.

so i always have to add sharpness with canon dpp sw.

i think sharpness is correct in all the shots excluding the owl.

the owl shot is a supercrop with 500% sharpening and low light with 4000 isos...it is not a good shot but i posted it as it is a

very difficult shot .just to give you an idea a friend of me with canon 500f4 is1 and 7D has not been able to get the shot....i got it with sigma and kenko tc because 5d mk3 is much, much better than 7D.So a bad shot but i got it...see you soon with good light condition shots:-)

It is much better than no shot at all.

As someone who used to have a 7D and traded it in on a 5D3 I can certainly agree with you.

I don't have any lens as long as your 500mm and the best I can do is my 100-400 with my 1.4 Kenko TC. That is 560mm but I normally do not use the combination because my hands are not steady enough and I generally don't carry a tripod with me.

I liked my 7D but it would not auto-focus with the 100-400 and 1.4 TC. The 5D3 will focus every time with the combination and, after the 5D3 firmware update, might focus with a 2.0. I will have to buy one and see.

I think your photos are quite good and, if I could afford the Sigma, I might buy it myself. Please keep posting.

hi Mike,

5dmk3 focus already with 100/400 or 400f5.6 +kenko2x dgx pro.

quality isnt wonderful but with good light camera focus well.

with next fw 5dmk3 will focus with canon tc but i dont know if it will be interested for me.

i have a friend with canon tc1.4III .actually it doesnt work on my camera with 100/400 or 500 f4.5.i will try it after the new fw update and i will buy only in case of concrete advantages on kenkos tc.

today i finally find the sun and you can see two new shots made as usual with:

sigma500f4.5dg+kenko1.4 tc dgx pro on 5dmk3.

same pp made with canon dpp:
