You are positive that's the micro four-thirds M. Zuiko vs. the four-thirds 9-18 for the DSLR system, right? $300 sounds more like a second-hand price for the four-thirds lens or a bait & switch offer on the micro model.

Just wondering; I have two, but some have asked me the same question, or criticized me for having two of the same body...I also have two OM-Ds, but that's a different story...

I mostly photograph when outdoors hiking. My standard hiking setup is a GH2+M.Z9-18 on my chest using bino straps for easy access (landscapes, canyons, etc.), and I also hand carry a GH2+14-140 to be ready for animal shots or other tele needs. If in big animal country, the 14-140 goes on the chest rig and a 100-300 on the hand carry.

Thanks. I use mine similarly (to have 2 focal lengths always available).
In reply to G1Shooter, Mar 19, 2013

My GH2s are used almost solely for video. I realized my need for a second body at a shoot in December and, luckily, B&H had new ones for $499 at that time. No-brainer.

As I said before, I asked 2 times about it. Until now it is cofirmed m.ZD not ZD and it is new

Thank you!

Are you saying you can buy the 9-18 for $300? Is this new or used?

Yes of course! I can buy it for 300$. It is brandnew. But only in Vietnam and I do not know about quantity.

It's a great deal, but I think the 7-14/4 is a better fit, given you already have the 12-35/2.8. The money might be better spent putting it towards the 7-14.

But if you won't be able to get the 7-14, then definitely snap up the 9-18. It's not as good as the 7-14 but is pretty decent, very small and covers a slightly more useful range for a walk around zoom (24, 28 and 35) while still offering some ultra wide with 18-24.

I was in Vietnam last week, but didn't find any good photo shops, nor any good prices. Is it a one-off deal? One shop I went in had primarily stock from circa 2006-2007 and was still asking full price for it!

I live in Hanoi, but I can only find Canikon stuff here - it's expensive and usually last year's tech too. I had to get my m43 gear on trips to other countries.

Where can you get m43 gear in Hanoi or Vietnam?

You can find reviews of that len and the 7-14mm in different sites :

7-14mm reviewed by DPreview

9-18mm reviewed by DPreview

7-14mm reviewed by Photozone.de

9-18mm reviewed by Photozone.de

7-14mm reviewed by SLRGear.com

9-18mm reviewed by SLRGear.com

From what I remember, the Olympus zoom is good but a little weaker at the long end, especially at 18mm, but you are already covered at this focal by the 12-35mm.

Thank you!

That is a most interesting comparison. One that I hand't considered nor seen before. I wish to learn the same thing. Thank you for bringing it to the forum's attention.

I also read a review on dpreview, know some problem when use on Pana body. I use on OM-D and plan to get another Olym body so I can reduce problem. Tks

For what its worth, I use the 9-18 with all Panasonic bodies, GH1, GF1 and GX1.  No issues!

Your pics and the FOV you make inside the pics also are very clear, usefull. Thank you.

Yes, I forgot to annotate the second picture - these are actual 14mm and 11mm pictures superimposed onto the 9mm as layers in Photoshop - it's not a FOV indicator, but actual shots taken on a tripod from the same place overlaid.

I had seen a picture with "frames" to indicate the FOV, but I felt real overlays taken by me were more visually revealing; especially the bridge shot. I took some hand-held ones recently as I couldn't find the original when somebody asked.

Quick and dirty hand-held, but real-world idea of the 5mm difference. When you can't step back any more...

I have the 9-18mm ZD from my E-400, the 12-50 (An amazing 'kit' lens) the Panasonic 14mm F2.5, the 45mm f1.8 and I'll be adding the MkII 75-300 for now as my budget won't stretch to other primes. I'll be interested in replacing the 12-50 with a constant f2.8 if one shows and my budget allows; or just buy a 20mm and 75mm prime later.

Good luck with your decision. If you can borrow/rent a 9-18mm, that may be the decider for you.

David.

Well it is a good deal, the 7-14mm is superb overall, but at that price get the Olympus lens.
