Olympus Stylus 780 (mju 780 Digital) review

This camera is our "ugly duckling": used in rain or spray conditions. So it gets the worst weather and the shiveriest users. Despite this negative bias, its images are rather good, often excellent. It has rescued many vacation moments when more water-sensitive cameras would not be risked. Since September 2007 this has been The backup camera. The combination of image stabilization and weatherproof, with a decent zoom range and good picture quality, is for me a winner. And, the auto-iso on this specific camera makes really good decisions, seems to detect shake (or not) and raise ISO (or not). Really reliable in point-and-shoot mode. We don't travel without it.

Problems:

All these are minor carps. I don't like non-viewfinder cameras as they force "hands out" shooting (much less steady) and eyeglasses-on composition. Olympus's "pick the focus point" is sufficiently weird in use that it is not the default; centre (sic in Canada) point focus is more reliable. Images are "a bit soft" at full screen / 100% but, like many SLR's, those images turn out to print A-OK.
No real problems.
