Difference between gamma range in different softwares
Mar 11, 2013

Hello,

the first step of my retouching process is to set a gamma value between 2.2 and 2.7 in Photoshop (or Elements)

In Photoshop, Capture One, PhotoLine, Capture NX, the range goes from B=0 to W=255, middle being 1 (i.e. non linear scale)

In GraphicConverter, Pixelmator, Aperture and anything with a Quartz engine, the range goes from B=-1 (or -1.5) to W=+1 (or +1.5), middle being 0 (i.e. linear scale)

Have you any explanation for the different approaches ?

If I want to use Aperture, what gamma range should I use ?

Thanks a lot for your help.

oops, made a mistake : in Aperture as in Pixelmator, the range is B=0 to W=1, middle being 0.5, linear scale also.

oops, a second mistake !

in Photoshop, the gamma range goes from 10 on the left side to 0 on the right side (and not from 0 to 255 as I wrote earlier)

But this doesn't solve my problem neither...

so to summarize :

Photoshop : [10 ; 0], middle = 1

Aperture : [0 ; 1], middle = 0.5

I guess it's the story of that amplifier that you could crank up to 11.
