The new Samsung 50 - 200 mm III arrived - are there any questions?

Well,

I got the new Samsung 50 - 200 mm III at home:

...and from behind:

...they really took care of details!

Looks nice!  I haven't actually used any of the 50-200mm lenses yet, how is it compared to the other two?  Is the metal mount new?

Yes, I would also like to know if you have any info on how this differs from previous versions.

Yes, it looks and feels nice...

...and I hope You have another question for me,

because I don't own the older ones, so I can't compare directly,

but maybe some others can help in this case.

-

However,

it focuses more silent and feels faster than the 20-50 mm...

...beside the better build quality.

I haven't done a direct comparison @ 50 mm yet, but this is something I want to do soon.

Does it look the same from behind - I mean the special shield behind the last lens?

It looks exactly the same, I would say that cosmeticly, the only diference is with the ifn button which is not present on mine.

OK,

what are Your experiences according the feel when zooming and manual focussing?

How noisy is the old, compared to the 20-50 and 12-24?

Have You experiences with the AF speed in low light in conjunction with the NX1000?

-

I have the feel, that the focus speed gets slower with increasing focal range.

Did You make similar observations?

How good was the OIS?

-

Or in general, what were the pros / cons with the old lens...

...and could You please put Your sample (without hood, cap etc.) on a balance,

that one can make assumptions, to less obvious changes?

Btw:

The new version has a weight of 402g (14,2 oz)

Wondering about that too. Do not use it handheld past 150mm. Otherwise it's fine. But a bit heavy. Weight of the new one? (difficult to find).

Well,

let's see (NX1000 @ 10 MP):

200 mm @ F6.3, ACDSee Pro 6 sharpening 60 radius 3

100 mm @ F6.3, ACDSee Pro 6 sharpening 60 radius 3

50 mm @ F6.3, ACDSee Pro 6 sharpening 60 radius 3

As You can probably see:

The lens could do fairly well, if the internal lenses were aligned well.

-

As mostly:

A theoretical good optical design, sadly delivered with a insufficent internal housing and a not pleasing quality control.

-

The lens will go back.

Really dont know the weight, it does not look like the Samsung D-Xenon 50-200 F4-5.6 ED, not got rubber "knots" but "lines", and got an af/mf switch and letters iFn...

A bit problems with softness to the right side I think, did not notice at first, switched from OIS 1 to 2, did not help. Maybe turn off stabilization, if I find out where to do it...

Softness on only one side of the frame indicates a manufacturing defect or similar, "decentering" is often what it is referred to as, an optical element isn't aligned quite right.  This is disturbingly common in standard zooms from all manufacturers.

OIS system means moving piece of glass inside so sometimes quality is worse.

Mostly i have OIS switched off and prefer short shutter time, but OK sometimes OIS is needed.

It can be that you got not perfect lens, it happens as Viking wrote.

I use version II and my is OK but in general I think my 18-55 set to @50 mm is sharper than 50-200 in the same FL and the geometry differs too.

I like 50-200 for nice bokeh - resolution is not first thing for me because on screen is good enough.

Bokeh and DR we cen see in every picture size.

Yes,

it is a shame, how a good idea is badly executed, thus wasting time, energie, ressources and nerves.

I like to see a first class 60-240 mm F4 zoom - if it is well executed (tack sharp across the frame - wide open and with nice bokeh!), it would be worth spending even 1000.- €

I asked for questions - You posed one I could answer, so we are at least happy with our short conversation and can hope for some improvements from Samsung and the local distributers...

I assume you are referring to the SMC Pentax DA* 60-250mm f/4? I love that lens, and yes, it is well over $1000 US.

I think your shots look pretty typical for a 50-200 mm kit lens (from most brands).  People always judge the lens over the entire range, but forget that a lens like a Pentax DA* 50-135mm f/2.8 covers a lesser range, and in the case of the Pentax DA 50-200mm I had at one point, it was pretty good over the 50-135mm range, but also goes out to 200.  It was also light in comparison, but it was easy to say it wasn't good at 200mm so dismiss the lens.
